The Leesa Mattress Review - Great Comfort But Is It Supportive Enough?
The Leesa Mattress is famed for it's comfort and for giving you a deeper and easier night's sleep. But is it supportive enough for people with back pain?
You probably already know someone who owns a Leesa mattress.
After all they've become so popular in the States over the past few years.
And if you do they've probably revelled in telling you how comfortable it is and how their sleep has improved so much since they got it.
In fact their smugness may be slightly annoying!
However, this opinion does seem to be a very common one if the hundreds of positive online reviews of the Leesa mattress are anything to go by.
Which would seem to make buying one for yourself a no brainer.
But as people with back pain things aren't that simple.
Because for us it's not just comfort that's important when choosing a new mattress.
As we also have to make sure it offers our backs great support too.
So I wanted to take a closer look at the Leesa mattress and see if it offers enough in the way of support to go along with it's undoubted comfort.
And here's what I found.
The Leesa Mattress At A Glance
How Is The Leesa Mattress Made Up?
The Leesa mattress is made up of 3 different layers of foam which combine to give you an extremely comfortable night's sleep.
And all of the foam used is CertiPUR-US certified so it's a safe mattress to sleep on.
This foam is covered with a polyester/lycra blend material cover that looks great and is soft and comfortable to lie down on.
The Top Layer - Cooling Comfort
The top layer of the Leesa mattress is 2" thick (Indention Force Deflection of 13 and a density of 3 PCF) and made up of LSA200 foam.
And this is your first layer of comfort.
But the biggest plus point here is the bounce.
As it's this bounce and springiness that stops you from sinking too far in to the memory foam layer below.
This relieves pressure, makes it easier to change positions during the night, and is especially good for side sleepers.
And this layer of foam is also designed with a microcell structure which allows air to flow through it.
Which stops you from overheating as you sleep.
The Middle Layer - Contouring Recovery
The memory foam layer in the middle is also 2" thick (IFD 9, density 3 PCF) and is where the main pressure relieving qualities of the mattress come from.
As this layer cushions you by molding to the contours of your body as you sleep.
And this gives you a relaxing and weightless feel which helps to relieve the pressure on your joints and muscles.
Allowing your body to recover overnight.
The Bottom Layer - Core Support
The base layer of the Leesa mattress is what gives the mattress it's strength and structural support.
As it's made of a high-density foam (IFD 32, density 1.8 PCF) and is 6" thick.
And this layer will also help to support you by spreading your weight out evenly across the mattress as you sleep.
Why It's Good For Your Back
While the Leesa is supremely comfortable it doesn't offer the same amount of support as some other mattresses on the market.
And while a deeper and more restorative sleep will be enough to help some people to reduce their back pain, others may need a little more in the way of support.
So why does the Leesa lack a bit of support?
Firstly, this mattress only has a medium firmness.
And while this is better for your back than the softer type of memory foam mattresses, it's not as good as a medium-firm mattress which is widely considered to be optimal for people with back pain.
So it may be too soft for people who need a firmer level of support.
But that's not to say that the Leesa mattress is completely lacking in support.
Far from it.
As the top layer of LSA200 foam is springy enough that it 'pushes back' against your body as you lay on it.
Giving you more support than you'd expect from a regular memory foam mattress.
And this is also great for stopping you from sinking into the mattress and getting stuck, which can be a problem with memory foam.
The middle memory foam layer cushions your body as you sleep, which relieves the pressure on your muscles and joints.
And the base layer of dense core foam provides you with support and stability by spreading your weight evenly across the mattress as you sleep.
Which also relieves pressure and helps to keep your back healthy.
So it's not that the Leesa mattress offers no support for your back, it's just that it's not as good in this regard as a latex mattress for instance.
But it can still help to reduce your back pain greatly if you enjoy sleeping on a softer and more comfortable mattress rather than a firmer one.
Is It Comfortable Too
So now we come to the best feature of the Leesa Mattress in my eyes, which is how comfortable it is.
And it really is dreamy.
As the memory foam that makes up the middle layer can make you feel like you are sleeping on a cloud.
This is because it molds to your body as you lay down on it giving you a weightless feel.
And by being able to get so comfortable in the one position this will cut out the need for excessive tossing and turning during the night.
Which will allow you to get a deeper and more restorative sleep, which is great for allowing your body to heal and repair itself overnight.
However, if you do need to shift positions the top layer of LSA200 foam makes it much easier than on regular memory foam mattresses.
This is because the bounce that it provides prevents you from sinking in and getting stuck in the memory foam.
Also this top layer is breathable as it has an 'egg crate' type design with small circular holes running through the top to allow air to flow through.
Which is great for keeping you and the mattress cooler during the night.
However, as with all memory foam mattresses the Leesa mattress can still feel hot to sleep on for some people even with this feature.
So if you've never slept on a memory foam mattress before this is something to be aware of.
And finally the foam of the mattress is covered by a polyester/lycra blend cover that is really soft and a joy to lie down on.
So if it's great comfort you are after in your new mattress then the Leesa is right up there as far as I'm concerned.
My Own Experience With Memory Foam
In writing a review like this it is only right that I give you full disclosure.
Which is that while memory foam mattresses are an absolute godsend to many people who suffer from back pain, they are not going to be the right fit for everybody.
And unfortunately for me that is the case.
As laying down on memory foam for anything longer than 10 minutes makes my back feel really uncomfortable.
So I need to stick to firmer style mattresses to get a comfortable and pain-free nights sleep.
However, don't let that put you off as I am in the minority here.
It's just something to be aware of if you've had a similar bad reaction to sleeping on memory foam mattresses in the past.
Some Other Nice Features
Save Money By Cutting Out The Middleman
It's always great when you can save yourself some money, especially on a big purchase like a new mattress.
And you can do just that with a Leesa mattress.
Because by buying directly online you are cutting out the middleman and overheads of a department store, which makes a massive difference to the overall price.
So the Leesa mattress is a far more affordable option than most traditional mattresses.
And Leesa are always running money off promotions that you can take advantage of too that bring the price down even further.
Take The Hassle Out Of Mattress Shopping
Everyone has a nightmare experience of mattress shopping right?
Driving around from department store to department store, looking at endless different varieties of mattresses.
Then finally buying one and having to tie it onto the roof rack of your car or van to drive it home.
Speeding on the way to try and get home and beat the ominous looking rain cloud that is threatening to get your new mattress soaking wet.
Then struggling to get it up the stairs and into the bedroom without knocking all the pictures off the wall and putting your back out.
So ordering your new Leesa mattress online is great.
As they'll deliver it directly to your door in a box, which you can then easily carry upstairs and into your bedroom, before unwrapping your new mattress into position on your bed.
How much easier is that?
100-Night Free Trial
Like most of the new breed of 'mattress in a box' companies, Leesa offers a 100-night free trial when you purchase their mattress.
Which is fantastic news.
As this means you get 3-months to give it the full once over before having to decide whether you want to keep it or not.
Which is more than enough time to decide one way or the other.
So all the pressure and risk of spending a lot of money on a new mattress disappears.
And if you don't like it they will come and collect it from you too.
No hassle at all.
Leesa are so confident in the quality and durability of their mattress that they offer a 10-year warranty with each one.
Which means if your mattress is faulty within this period they will replace it with a new one.
So you can sleep easy after your purchase knowing you are well covered for years to come.
CertiPUR-US Certified Foam
Another good thing about the Leesa mattress is that it's a very safe mattress to use.
This isn't always the case with foam mattresses as they can give off harmful gasses and be a fire hazard.
However, all of the foams used in the Leesa mattress are CertiPUR-US certified.
This means they don't contain any dangerous chemicals and have low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions.
And they are also fire-retardant and hypoallergenic.
So you get a far safer sleeping experience and healthier indoor air quality in your bedroom too.
Good Ethics - The One In Ten Program
One of the things I really love about Leesa is their commitment to giving back to local communities.
And an example of this is their 'One-Ten' program.
So for every 10 mattresses that they sell Leesa will donate 1 new mattress to a local charity or homeless shelter for free.
How fantastic is that?
So not only are you getting a great mattress by buying a Leesa, you are also playing your part in helping people who are less fortunate.
And I don't know about you but that makes me feel much better inside when making a big purchase like a new mattress.
Take a look at the video above to see the 'One-Ten' program in action.
>> The Back On Site Verdict <<
So is the Leesa mattress any good for people with back pain?
I'd say the answer to that is it can be for most people but there will be others who will need a mattress that offers a bit more support.
So perhaps it's a 'try it for yourself and see' kind of mattress rather than a must buy.
But if you're after a softer and more comfortable mattress than the firmer ones designed for people with bad backs then the Leesa can be a great option.
Because it's super comfortable to sleep on without being too soft.
Which will go a long way to relieving the pressure on your muscles and joints.
And it doesn't allow your body to sink too far into the memory foam, so you can keep a better alignment throughout the night too.
However, while the deeper sleep and pressure relief that this comfort brings is great for helping your back to heal, it doesn't provide the same level of support that a latex mattress can.
So if you need a firmer mattress to keep your back happy then you may need to look elsewhere.
But for everyone else the Leesa is a solid choice.
It's even been awarded a Which? Best Buy rating as one of the best mattresses that they've tested in recent years.
Which means it must be half decent!
So if you want a more comfortable and restorative sleep give the Leesa mattress a try.
After all you can return it free of charge if it doesn't suit you so you have nothing to lose either way.
