The Leesa Mattress Review - Great Comfort But Is It Supportive Enough?

The Leesa Mattress is famed for it's comfort and for giving you a deeper and easier night's sleep. But is it supportive enough for people with back pain?

You probably already know someone who owns a Leesa mattress.

After all they've become so popular in the States over the past few years.

And if you do they've probably revelled in telling you how comfortable it is and how their sleep has improved so much since they got it.

In fact their smugness may be slightly annoying!

However this opinion does seem to be a very common one if the hundreds of positive online reviews of the Leesa mattress are anything to go by.

Which would seem to make buying one for yourself a no brainer.

But as people with back pain things aren't that simple.

Because for us it's not just comfort that's important when choosing a new mattress.

We also have to make sure it offers our backs great support too.

So I wanted to take a closer look at the Leesa mattress and see if it offers enough in the way of support to go along with it's undoubted comfort.

And here's what I found.

How The Leesa Mattress Is Made Up

1. Avena Foam. 2. Memory Foam. 3. High-Density Foam.

The Leesa mattress is made up of 3 different layers of foam which combine to give you an extremely comfortable and fairly supportive night's sleep.

And all of the foam used is CertiPUR-US certified so it's a safe mattress to sleep on.

The foam is covered with a polyester/lycra blend material cover that looks great and is soft and comfortable to lie down on.

Top Layer - Avena Foam

The top layer of the Leesa mattress is 2" thick (IFD 20, density 3.65 PCF) and made up of springy Avena foam.

This is your first layer of comfort but the biggest plus point is the bounce.

As it is this bounce and springiness that stops you sinking in to the memory foam layer below and makes it easier to change positions during the night.

This layer of foam is also designed with circular holes running through the top of it to allow air to flow through.

Which stops you from overheating as you sleep.

Middle Layer - Memory Foam

The memory foam layer in the middle is also 2" thick (IFD 9, density 3 PCF) and is where the main comfort of the mattress comes from.

This layer cushions you by moulding to the contours of your body as you sleep.

And this gives you a relaxing and weightless feel which helps to relieve the pressure on your joints and muscles.

Bottom Layer - Core Support Foam

The base layer of the Leesa mattress is what gives the mattress it's strength and structural support.

It is made of a high-density foam (IFD 32, density 1.8 PCF) and is 6" thick.

This layer will also help to support you by spreading your weight out evenly across the mattress as you sleep.

How Comfortable Is It?

Will you be this happy on your Leesa mattress?

Before I get to the issue of support I'm going to start with the best feature of the Leesa Mattress in my eyes and that is how comfortable it is.

And it really is dreamy.

As the memory foam that makes up the middle layer can make you feel like you are sleeping on a cloud.

This is because it moulds to your body as you lie down on it giving you a weightless feel.

And by being able to get so comfortable in the one position this will stop the need for excessive tossing and turning during the night.

Which will allow you to get a deeper and more restorative sleep which is great for allowing your body to heal and repair itself overnight.

However if you do need to shift positions the top layer of Avena foam makes this much easier than on regular memory foam mattresses.

This is because the bounce that it provides prevents you from sinking in and getting stuck in the memory foam.

Also this top layer is breathable as it has an 'egg crate' type design with small circular holes running through the top to allow air to flow through.

Which is great for keeping you and the mattress cooler during the night.

However as with all memory foam mattresses the Leesa mattress can still feel hot to sleep on for some people even with this feature.

So if you have never slept on a memory foam mattress before this is something to be aware of.

And finally the foam of the mattress is encased by a polyester/lycra blend cover that is really soft and a joy to lie down on.

So if it's great comfort you are after in your new mattress then the Leesa is right up there as far as I'm concerned.

But there is one other issue to beware of and that is the synthetic smell that this mattress gives off at first.

This is common for memory foam mattresses and isn't very pleasant but it will fade quickly (usually within a few days at the most).

After that you're golden.

Will It Help To Reduce Your Back Pain?

Would sleeping on a Leesa mattress help this guy?

While the Leesa is supremely comfortable and allows you to sleep more deeply it doesn't offer the same amount of support as some other mattresses on the market.

So while a deeper and more restorative sleep will be enough to help many people to reduce their back pain, others may need a little more in the way of support.

So why does the Leesa lack a bit of support?

Firstly this mattress only has a medium firmness.

And while this is better for your back than the softer type of memory foam mattresses, it's not as good as a medium-firm mattress which is widely considered to be optimal for people with back pain.

So it may be too soft for people who need a firmer level of support.

But that's not to say that the Leesa mattress is completely lacking in support.

Far from it.

The top layer of Avena foam is springy enough that it 'pushes back' against you as you lay on it which gives you more support than a regular memory foam mattress.

And this is also great for stopping you from sinking into the memory foam and getting stuck like you can with many other foam mattresses.

The memory foam layer itself cushions you as you sleep which relieves the pressure on your muscles and joints.

And the base layer of high-density foam provides you with core support and stability by spreading your weight evenly across the mattress as you sleep.

Which also relieves pressure and helps to keep your back healthy.

So it's not that the Leesa mattress offers no support for your back.

It's just that it's not as good in this regard as other mattresses on the market.

But it can still help to reduce your back pain greatly if you enjoy sleeping on a softer and more comfortable mattress rather than a firmer one.

Personal Disclosure

While memory foam mattresses are an absolute godsend to many people who suffer from back pain, they are not going to be the right fit for everybody.

And unfortunately for me that is the case.

As laying down on memory foam for anything longer than 10 minutes makes my back feel really uncomfortable.

So I need to stick to firmer style spring mattresses to get a comfortable and pain-free nights sleep.

However don't let that put you off as I am in the large minority here.

It's just something to be aware of if you've had a similar bad reaction to sleeping on memory foam mattresses in the past.

Some Other Nice Features

You Can Save Yourself A Packet

I always find the nicest feature in a big purchase is when you can save yourself some money on it.

Be kind to my wallet and I will love you for it!

And the Leesa mattress is very kind.

Because buying directly online and cutting out the middleman and overheads of a department store makes a massive difference to the price.

Which makes the Leesa mattress a far more affordable option than most traditional mattresses.

And Leesa are always running money off promotions that you can take advantage of too that bring the price down even further.

You can use their latest discount by clicking and purchasing your Leesa mattress through this link.

It's Much Less Hassle Than Buying A Regular Mattress

Everyone has a nightmare experience of going mattress shopping right?

Driving around from department store to department store for hours on end.

Getting confused by the amount of different mattresses on offer.

Finally buying one and then fighting with it to tie it onto the roof rack of your car or van to drive it home.

Speeding on the way to try and get home and beat the ominous looking rain cloud that is threatening to get your new mattress soaking wet.

They're smiling for now but they won't be when the rain comes!

Then struggling to get it up the stairs and into the bedroom without knocking all the pictures off the wall and putting your back out.

Fun times!

So order your Leesa online, let them deliver it directly to your door in a box, easily carry this box upstairs and into your bedroom, unwrap your new mattress onto your bed and leave it to breathe.

How much easier is that?

100-Night Free Trial

Like most of the new breed of 'mattress in a box' companies, Leesa offers a 100-night free trial when you purchase their mattress.

Which is fantastic news.

As this means you get 3-months to give it the full once over before having to decide whether you want to keep it or not.

Which is more than enough time to decide one way or the other.

So all the pressure and risk of spending a lot of money on a new mattress disappears.

And if you don't like it they will come and collect it from you too.

No hassle at all.

10-Year Warranty

Leesa are so confident in the quality and durability of their mattress that they offer a 10-year warranty with each one.

Which means if your mattress is faulty within this period they will replace it with a new one.

So you can sleep easy after your purchase knowing you are well covered for years to come.

Use Of CertiPUR-US Certified Foams

One good thing about the Leesa mattress is that it's a very safe mattress to use.

This isn't always the case with foam mattresses as they can give off harmful gasses and be a fire hazard.

However all the foams used in the Leesa mattress are CertiPUR-US certified.

This means they don't contain any dangerous chemicals and have low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions.

And they are also fire-retardant and hypoallergenic.

So you get a far safer sleeping experience and better air quality in your bedroom too.

Ethics - The 'One-Ten' Program

One of the things I really love about Leesa is their commitment to giving back to local communities.

And an example of this is their 'One-Ten' program.

For every 10 mattresses that they sell Leesa donate 1 new mattress to a local charity or homeless shelter for free.

How fantastic is that?

So not only are you getting a great mattress by buying a Leesa, you are also playing a part in helping people who are less fortunate.

And I don't know about you but that makes me feel much better inside when making a big purchase like a new mattress.

Take a look at the video below to see the 'One-Ten' program in action.

>> The Back On Site Verdict <<

So is the Leesa mattress any good for people with back pain?

I'd say the answer to that is it can be for most people but there will be others who will need a mattress that offers a bit more support.

So perhaps it is a 'try it for yourself and see' kind of mattress rather than a must buy.

So if you are after a softer and more comfortable mattress than the firmer ones designed for people with bad backs then the Leesa can be a great option.

Because it is super comfortable to sleep on without being too soft which will go a long way to relieving the pressure on your muscles and joints.

And it doesn't allow your body to sink into the memory foam and get stuck so you can keep a better alignment throughout the night too.

However while the deeper sleep and pressure relief that this comfort brings is great for helping your back to heal, it doesn't provide the same level of support that many other mattresses do.

So if you need a firmer mattress to keep your back happy then you may need to look elsewhere.

But for everyone else the Leesa is a solid choice.

It has even been awarded a Which? Best Buy rating as one of the best mattresses that they've tested in recent years.

Which means it must be half decent!

So if you want a more comfortable and restorative sleep give the Leesa mattress a try.

After all you can return it free of charge if it doesn't suit you so you have nothing to lose either way.
