So latex sounds pretty good right?

However while it can be a great material for those of us with back pain, there are a few downsides that mean it won't be for everyone.

  • Good quality latex mattresses and mattress toppers are more expensive than memory foam ones.
  • Some people may be allergic to latex.
  • Latex can feel a bit too firm for some people to sleep on comfortably.
  • Certain synthetic blends of latex may contain harmful chemicals (stick to 100% natural latex to be on the safe side).

But by making sure you are suited to them and choosing the right type of latex topper or mattress you can reap the rewards for both the health of your back and your overall sleep quality.

  • Some types of memory foam can be too hot to sleep on for some, as it traps body heat and doesn't wick away moisture.

  • You can feel stuck in the memory foam at times, as the way it molds to your body makes it hard to move around in bed.
  • Memory foam can give off an unpleasant odour at first.

It basically boils down to your own needs and preferences.

However if you prefer to sleep on something a bit firmer and more supportive, then you should go for latex instead.
