The Best Mattress For People With Back Pain - Find Yourself Some Relief

Sleeping on the right mattress is one of the most important things you can do if you want to live a life free from back pain.

My Top Pick

The best mattress for people with back pain

This mattress is great for people with back pain as the Talalay latex means it has an ideal mix of comfort and support. And it's really cool, healthy and safe to sleep on too.

However, if you've had any experience of mattress shopping in the past you'll know what a nightmare it can be.

As you are bamboozled with so many options right from the very start.

Such as should you go for a soft, medium-firm, or firm mattress?

And is it more important to go for a comfortable one or a supportive one?

Is memory foam or latex the best filling to go for?

Or maybe pocket springs, open coil, duck or goose feathers?

How about a hybrid mattress that combines a few different materials? Are they any good for your back?

"Aarghh, I just want a good night's kip!"

I hear you.

But the problem is it's difficult to know which is the best mattress for you as everyone is different.

And we all need different things to be able to get a good night's sleep and wake up pain-free.

So to help you I've chosen a selection of mattresses in this round up that are great for people with back pain including:

These include a mixture of materials with some being softer and more comfortable, while others are firmer and more supportive.

So you should be able to find one that suits your needs among them.

Why Sleeping On The Right Mattress Is So Important

Choosing the right mattress is so important because sleeping on the wrong one can be a major cause of back pain.

In fact in a survey of orthopedic surgeons a whopping 95% said they thought the type of mattress used by their patients played a part in how well they managed their back pain.

And they should know as they have first hand experience right?

So when you consider you spend a third of your life in bed then you really need to make sure you are doing it on the right mattress.

One that supports you but is still comfortable, can relieve pressure on your body and reduce your back pain, and greatly improves your health and well-being.

As being able to get a good quality restorative sleep has been found to reduce chronic widespread pain.

And I want to help you to do that here with this review of what I consider to be the best mattresses for people with back pain currently on the market.

Which Type Of Mattress Is Best For Back Pain?

best mattress for back pain

Take the confusion out of mattress shopping.

There is no one type of mattress that is best for people with back pain.

So I've included a selection of different mattresses here so that everyone can find one that suits them no matter what their needs and preferences are.

There's a naturally made latex mattress that is great for comfort and support and really healthy to sleep on.

I've also included some hybrid mattresses that have combinations of memory foam, latex, and inner springs that attempt to give you the best of all worlds.

And finally there are a couple of mattresses with a mixture of foams in them that aim to provide a good mix of comfort and support.

So, whether you need a softer mattress that gives you comfort and pressure relief or a firmer mattress that provides more support, you'll find it here.

I've also only included mattresses that have a home trial period (from 60 to 120 days) where you can return them for a refund if you're not satisfied.

Which is so important as you'll be able to give them a really good test to make sure they are the right one for you before committing your hard earned cash.

So let's get started with my top choice as best mattress for people with back pain which is the Zenhaven natural latex mattress by Saatva.

The Zenhaven Mattress

Features

  • 10" thick pure latex mattress.
  • 2 comfort levels in one mattress: medium and medium-firm.
  • Made up of 4 layers of pure Talalay latex.
  • As eco-friendly and natural as a latex mattress can be.
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified as free of toxins.
  • Hypo-allergenic and fire retardant.
  • Extremely durable.
  • Made in the USA.
  • 120-day free home trial.
  • 20-year conditional warranty.

Comfort

  • One side of the mattress is medium-firm, the other is a softer medium so you can choose which you prefer.
  • The latex comfort layer gives you an elevated feeling of weightlessness offering great pressure relief.
  • The springiness of the latex makes changing positions easy.
  • While the open cell structure makes it breathable and cool to sleep on.
  • It comes with a quilted cover filled with organic New Zealand wool for comfort and coolness.

Support

  • The medium-firm side of the mattress provides the best level of support for people with back pain.
  • Natural Talalay latex is springy and responds to every movement, providing great support.
  • Latex provides greater support than memory foam.
  • It doesn't allow your body to sink in too far so you can maintain good alignment and posture.
  • A good level of support remains all the way to the edges of the mattress.

The Zenhaven mattress is organically constructed and manufactured, and as such is one of the most eco-friendly mattresses on the market.

As it consists of 100% natural Talalay processed latex, so it's healthy and safe to sleep on while also being extremely durable and long-lasting.

And this one is my top pick for mattresses for people with back pain.

Because the natural latex provides the best mix of comfort and support, and there is a different feel on either side of the mattress.

So one side has a more supportive medium-firmness which is great for people with back pain.

But if you prefer something softer you can turn it over to the other side which has a more comfortable medium feel.

And this is great as you can choose the level of firmness and comfort that suits your body the best.

How It's Made Up

The Zenhaven mattress has 4 layers encased in a quilted organic cotton cover filled with organic New Zealand wool as follows:

  • Identical top and bottom comfort layers made of latex, 1.5" thick, and contain 5 zones with different densities.
  • Two middle support layers of latex, both 3" thick, one with a medium firm density, the other with a medium density.

This means that you get a different level of comfort and support depending on which side of the mattress you sleep on.

So it's like getting two mattresses in one.

Why It's Good For Your Back

Latex mattresses are a great choice for people with back pain because of their bounce and spring.

This makes them really supportive as they push back against your body weight rather than allowing you to sink in as you lay on them.

Which is great as this will keep your spine aligned, relieve pressure on your body, and help you to maintain a healthy sleeping posture throughout the night.

And the Zenhaven mattress does a great job of this.

As the natural Talalay latex in it provides great support for your back, responding to each and every movement that your body makes.

The comfort layer at the top of the mattress has 5 zones containing varying levels of density, so you get more support where you need it in your hips, shoulders, and lower back.

While the middle layers of latex provide the strength and stability which stop you from sinking too far in to the mattress.

Which relieves the pressure on your body and keeps your sleeping posture healthy.

These middle layers have different densities, so both sides of the mattress offer different levels of support for your back.

But the ideal side to sleep on is the medium-firm side, as medium-firm mattresses have been shown to be the best bet for people that suffer from back pain.

And the extra level of support this provides over the medium side (it's 18% firmer) could make a big difference for your back.

However, if you prefer sleeping on the softer side and find you get enough support this way then go for that instead.

But all in all the Zenhaven mattress does a great job for people with back pain.

As it offers support, relieves pressure, and keeps your spine aligned throughout the night.

How Comfortable Is It?

The Zenhaven mattress is also a really comfortable one to sleep on.

This is because the latex pushes back against your body, giving you an elevated sensation that is great for relieving pressure on your body throughout the night.

Which lets you drift off into a deeper and more restorative sleep where your body can heal and repair itself.

And having the two different levels of firmness in the same mattress is a real plus for comfort.

Because you can choose the medium-firm side if you prefer to sleep on something firmer.

But by flipping it over you can get a softer and more cushioning feel from the medium side.

And the 5 different density zones on both sides of the mattress means it's softer and more comfortable in areas where you don't need support.

Also the bounce of the natural latex means you don't get stuck, so changing positions during the night is effortless.

Which all bodes well for a great night's sleep!

Another thing to mention is that latex mattresses sleep far cooler than memory foam mattresses.

And this is especially true of the Zenhaven mattress, as the open cell structure keeps air flowing through it.

Which will regulate your temperature and keep you cool and comfortable as you sleep.

And the quilted cover with a filling of organic wool also wicks away heat and moisture from your body.

So if you're looking for a mattress that is as comfortable as it is supportive, check out the Zenhaven.

Pros & Cons

PROS

  • The Zenhaven mattress has 2 different comfort levels.
  • It's made from pure Talalay latex making it great for your health and the environment.
  • The 5 different zones of density on the top layers makes it comfortable and supportive in all the right places.
  • It molds to your body but is responsive enough to push back rather than letting you sink in too far.
  • This is good for pressure relief and keeping your spine in alignment.
  • The open cell Talalay latex design is more breathable and cooler than Dunlop processed latex and memory foam mattresses.
  • It's great for back and stomach sleepers.
  • And extremely durable and long-lasting.
  • It's hypo-allergenic, free from toxins and VOCs.
  • Comes with a 120-day home trial so you can give it a good road test before committing to buying.

CONS

  • The mattress is very heavy (being made from latex) so can't be moved easily.
  • The sensation of sleeping on latex isn't going to suit everyone.
  • 20-year warranty is conditional.
  • You have to pay a $99 delivery charge.

What's The Verdict?

I think the Zenhaven mattress is a fantastic choice for people with back pain.

As not only is it extremely supportive, it's also really comfortable too.

So you can get all the pressure relieving qualities as well as keeping your spine in alignment and your sleeping posture healthy.

And having the choice between two different levels of firmness on either side means that you can find a side to sleep on that will keep you happy and comfortable.

Plus the fact that it's made of natural products means it's a really safe and healthy mattress to sleep on too.

So if you've always wanted to try a latex mattress to help your back pain this is the one I'd recommend going for.

  • This is great for keeping your spine in alignment as you sleep.
  • While also helping you to maintain a healthy sleeping posture.

The Essentia Classic 8 is a 100% natural mattress that brings you the comfort of top quality memory foam alongside the great support provided by Dunlop-processed latex.

Now before I begin I have to say that this is the most expensive mattress I'm reviewing here.

And for this reason it may not be suitable for everyone.

But if you're willing to make a long-term investment in the health of your back and sleep quality then this mattress is a great option.

How It's Made Up

So why is it so expensive?

It's because of the natural process involved that makes it the world's only natural mattress containing memory foam.

As the Essentia Classic 8 mattress is a combination of natural memory foam and latex made up of two layers as follows:

  • A top comfort layer made from 2" of high-density natural memory foam for comfort and pressure relief.
  • And a base support layer made from 6" of Dunlop processed natural hevea latex for support and stability.

And this is all covered by an organic cotton cover.

So it's one of the healthiest mattresses you can find and one where you can be assured of a healthy, safe and allergy-free sleep.

Why It's Good For Your Back

So let's talk about the support it provides.

The Essentia Classic 8 mattress has a medium-firm feel which is great.

Because medium-firm mattresses have been shown to provide the best amount of support for people with persistent back pain.

And most of this support comes form the base layer made up of Dunlop processed natural latex.

This creates a firmer feel than Talalay processed latex, and as such is great for keeping your spine in alignment as you sleep.

Because it pushes back against your body weight rather than allowing you to sink in.

And this helps to relieve the pressure and strain that your back can come under throughout the night.

This pressure relief also means that your blood circulation is increased during the night.

And this helps your body to heal and repair as you sleep, as your muscles can get the oxygen and nutrients they need to become healthy again.

So you can sleep in a healthy posture that relieves pressure and reduces back pain.

How Comfortable Is It?

The Essentia Classic 8 mattress is also an extremely comfortable one.

As the 2" top layer of natural memory foam molds to the contours of your body as you sleep, relieving pressure, especially in your hips, shoulders, and lower back.

And this pressure relief stops the need for tossing and turning during the night, allowing your body to relax and drift into a deeper and more restorative sleep.

In fact, for pressure relief it's among the most comfortable in the world.

As the Healthcare industry have rated the Essentia mattresses as having an mmHg rating of 12.43, making them the best rated mattresses in the world for pressure relief.

So you'll get a great sleep on this mattress for sure.

And it sleeps cool too, with the natural memory foam being 80% more breathable than traditional memory foam.

However, you need to be aware that this doesn't mean it never gets hot, just that there is less chance of heat retention with this one.

Also the latex base means you're less likely to get stuck during the night.

Which makes moving around in bed a lot easier.

Pros & Cons

PROS

  • It provides a medium-firmness that is perfect for people with back pain.
  • The 100% natural memory foam top layer is great for relieving pressure in a healthy way.
  • It's among the most comfortable and healthy mattresses on the market.
  • The Dunlop processed latex base means you have great support during the night.
  • It molds to your body but pushes back rather than letting you sink in too far.
  • The mattress is extremely durable and long-lasting.
  • And more breathable and cooler than other mattresses containing memory foam.
  • It's hypoallergenic.
  • And comes with a 60-day money back guarantee so you can give it a good road test.

CONS

  • The all natural composition means this mattress is more expensive.
  • It may be too soft for some who prefer a firmer latex mattress.

What's The Verdict

So all in all the Essentia Classic 8 mattress is a top choice that will provide you with a healthy sleeping experience, superior comfort, and great support.

The downside is the high price which can put it out of many people's price range.

However, keep an eye on the Essentia website as they constantly run cash back or discount offers on their range of mattresses.

Which can make a big difference to the purchase price.

The Sapira Hybrid mattress has been developed to provide a luxurious sleeping experience but also a great level of support.

And it achieves this brilliantly.

As by combining individual pocket springs with memory foam and a top layer designed to mimic the support of latex, they have come up with a great mattress.

And it's made in the USA using the highest quality materials so you can be assured of getting a great night's sleep on this one.

How It's Made Up

The Sapira Hybrid mattress is 11" thick and contains a combination of 5 different layers as follows:

  • The second layer made from 1.5" of memory foam the contours to your body and relieves pressure.

  • Two 1" thick supportive transition layers of foam, one between the second layer and base layer, and the other underneath the base layer.

This is encased in a polyester/lycra blend cover that is designed to allow the mattress to breathe.

Why It's Good For Your Back

So what kind of support can you expect from the Sapira Hybrid mattress?

The short answer is very good!

As the mattress has a medium-firm feel which has been shown to be the preferred firmness for people with back pain.

The top layer of foam on this mattress has been designed to match the bounce and responsiveness of latex, while the second layer contours to your body.

This is great for relieving pressure on your neck, back, shoulders and hips as you sleep.

And it also means you won't sink in too much so you'll stay supported as you sleep.

So you'll be able to maintain a healthy sleeping posture throughout the night.

However, the majority of this support comes from the 1,000 steel pocket springs which adjust to your every movement during the night.

This works great for keeping your spine in a good alignment no matter which sleeping position you end up in.

And these springs are taken right to the edge of the mattress rather than being encased in foam.

Which gives the Sapira mattress fantastic support even at the very edges of it.

So all in all a great mattress from a support point of view.

How Comfortable Is It?

Now I'll start here by saying that because of the great support that the Sapira mattress gives, it may feel too firm for some people who prefer the traditionally soft feel of memory foam.

But if you do like a slightly firmer sleeping surface then this one can be really comfortable too.

As the top layer of foam is springier than regular memory foam.

And while this means it isn't as soft, it does make it easier to move around the bed in and not get stuck.

Also the pocket springs adapting to every movement you makes it easier to move around during the night.

However, the main comfort here comes from the second layer of memory foam.

As this molds to the contours of your body which relieves pressure and allows you to get into a deeper and more restorative sleep.

And on top of this the Sapira mattress is designed to be far more breathable and thus cooler to sleep on than traditional memory foam.

This means it won't trap body heat as much and air can pass through it, keeping you cooler as you sleep.

  • Finally the base layer is 15.5cm thick and has 7 different zones made from a high density foam to give you support and stability.

And they all work together to give you a comfortable and supportive night's sleep.

Why It's Good For Your Back

The Simba Hybrid mattress has a lot going for it when it comes to being good for people with back pain.

As firstly, it's a medium-firm mattress.

And this has been shown in scientific studies to be the optimal firmness for people with persistent back pain.

Also Simba are constantly researching and updating the design of the mattress to make sure it's as good as it can be.

This has resulted in a mattress with a combination of different materials that all compliment each other to give you great support.

So the second layer of Simbatex synthetic latex is great for having some bounce and supporting your back as you lie on it.

But the main area of support is the layer which contains 2,500 canonical pocket springs.

As these springs individually adapt to each and every movement you make and really help to keep your spine and body in a good alignment as you sleep.

This will also improve your sleeping posture whichever position you like to sleep in and take the pressure off your back and joints.

Also, the push back of the springs is great for pressure relief and something which elevates the Simba Hybrid mattress above others that rely on just a combination of foams.

Finally, the 7 different support zones in the base layer of foam are excellent for spreading pressure evenly and reducing any strain on your body.

So overall the Simba Hybrid mattress is a great choice for keeping your back supported and healthy as you sleep.

How Comfortable Is It?

Fortunately the Simba Hybrid mattress doesn't lack in the comfort department either.

As the fourth layer of visco memory foam molds to the contours of your body, which is great for relieving pressure on your muscles and joints as you sleep.

And it will allow you to become comfortable in one position.

Meaning it will cut down on the amount of tossing and turning you do throughout the night, and get into a deeper and happier sleep.

The top two layers of the Simba Hybrid mattress are both breathable, which means it sleeps cooler than most mattresses that contain memory foam.

So you'll be less likely to overheat during the night.

However, this mattress may feel a bit firm at first if you are expecting a memory foam mattress that is soft and squishy.

But it's this firmness that gives you the support for your back that it needs.

So while this may take a bit of getting used to, many people have said that they get a really comfortable night's sleep on their Simba mattress.

Pros & Cons

  • The 884 individually wrapped coils adjust to your movements as you sleep, keeping you supported in every position.
  • And the steel coil support base provides strength and stability while also eliminating sagging.
  • A firmer version of this mattress is also available if you need stronger support.

This is the second mattress by Saatva that makes my list of the best mattresses for people with back pain.

However, unlike the Zenhaven which is made from natural latex, this one is a hybrid mattress that uses a mixture of inner springs and memory foam.

And as a result you get a luxurious feeling mattress that is also very supportive for your back.

How It's Made Up

The Saatva mattress is 11.5" thick and is made up of 2 layers that each have a different combination of materials.

  • Top comfort layer - This is 7.5" thick and comprises of a quilted Euro pillow top, a thin layer of memory foam underneath, then a 4" layer of individually wrapped coils that provide spring and support.
  • Bottom support layer - This is 4" thick and contains 416 traditional steel coils which is what gives the mattress support and stability, sitting on a base foam layer of high-density poly foam.

And there is also a thick layer of high-density poly foam running around the sides of the mattress that provides support right to the edges.

As well as an enhanced lumbar support area in the middle third of the foam that is denser and offers more support.

Why It's Good For Your Back

Saatva have made a great mattress for people with back pain.

Firstly, there is something they call 'Spinal Zone Technology' which is an active wire running through the middle third of the mattress.

This wire encourages you to maintain the correct spinal alignment as you sleep, which helps to relieve pressure and strain on your body.

And in tests carried out by Saatva it was found that this lead to a 34% reduction in back pain and a 96% reduction in back stiffness.

So pretty impressive results.

Then there is enhanced lumbar support in this mattress, as the foam is denser in the middle third to give your back even more support.

The top layer of individually wrapped coils give the mattress a springiness as you lie down on it, pushing back against your body weight and stopping you from sinking in too far.

This helps you to maintain a healthy sleeping posture and relieves pressure and strain on your body.

While the steel coils in the base layer help to keep you stable and supported throughout the night.

So the Saatva mattress does a great job of relieving pressure and tension in your back as you sleep.

How Comfortable Is It?

The Saatva mattress is supremely comfortable too, feeling like a mattress you'd find in a luxury hotel.

So the first layer of comfort you'll feel is from the Euro pillow top, which is padded and gives a nice cushioning effect on your body.

And the thin layer of memory foam underneath the pillow top adds to this comfort further.

The individually wrapped coils underneath that respond to every movement you make, which means it's easy to move around in bed during the night.

And they push back against your body weight, so you won't sink in to the mattress too much.

Which will keep your spine in alignment and relieve pressure on your muscles and joints as you sleep.

And the coil construction of this mattress makes it a really cool one to sleep on.

As air can flow through the spaces between the coils and the convoluted parts of the memory foam.

This means you get a really cool and comfortable nights sleep.

And finally the foam edge support is great as it stops sagging at the edges.

This gives you a bigger sleep surface and stops you from feeling like you're going to fall out of bed if you end up right over by the edge!

So while the Saatva mattress may not be able to reach the same comfort levels as a high quality memory foam mattress, it will sleep cooler and still give you a great night's sleep.

Pros & Cons

What's The Verdict?

Overall I think the Saatva mattress is a great choice for people with back pain that want a mattress with a luxurious feel that also has good support.

As the spinal zone technology and enhanced lumbar support here really elevate it above traditional inner spring mattresses.

While the memory foam, Euro pillow top and individually wrapped coils help to make it cool and comfortable to sleep on too.

  • Made in the USA.
  • CertiPUR-US certified.
  • Hypoallergenic and fire-retardant.

  • 10-year full replacement warranty.

Comfort

  • The top layer of LSA200 foam allows air to flow through it, keeping you cool as you sleep.
  • The bounce of this layer also makes changing positions easier.
  • While the middle layer of memory foam molds to your body relieving pressure.
  • The cover is super soft and comfortable to lay on.

Support

  • Has a medium feel which may be too soft for people who prefer a firmer mattress.
  • The top layer of LSA200 is springy and provides more support than regular memory foam (it has an IFD of 13 and a density of 3.65 PCT).
  • While the bottom layer of high-density foam provides support and stability.
  • This mattress can support people up to 300 lbs.

The Leesa mattress is made from 3 different layers of foam that make it a really comfortable choice.

And while it doesn't offer the same level of support as some of the other mattresses featured here, it's still one that can be good for people with back pain.

How It's Made Up

The Leesa mattress is 10" thick and made up of 3 foam layers which all combine to give you cool and comfortable night's sleep.

  • The top layer is 2" thick and made up of LSA200 foam with a microcell structure.
  • While the middle layer is 2" thick and made with memory foam that contours to your body and relieves pressure.
  • The base layer is 6" thick and made with a high density foam which gives the mattress it's support and stability.

And this is all encased in Leesa's polyester/lycra blend cover that is soft, comfortable, and great to look at.

Why It's Good For Your Back

While the Leesa is supremely comfortable, it doesn't offer the same level of support as some other mattresses.

And while a deep and comfortable sleep may be enough to help some people with back pain, others may need a little more in the way of support.

But why does the Leesa mattress lack support?

Well the problems begin when you realise it only has a medium firmness, so it may be too soft for people who need a firmer mattress.

But that's not to say that the Leesa mattress is completely lacking in support.

As the top layer of LSA200 foam is springy enough to push back against your body weight to stop you sinking too far into it.

Which can help to keep your spine in alignment and relieve pressure on your body.

While the middle memory foam layer cushions your body, which relieves the pressure further on your muscles and joints.

And the base layer of dense core foam will give you support and stability by spreading your weight evenly across the mattress as you sleep.

So it's not that the Leesa mattress offers no support for your back, it's just not as good as some other mattresses.

But it can still be a good choice for your back if you enjoy sleeping on a soft and comfortable mattress rather than a firmer one.

How Comfortable Is It?

As you've probably worked out by now, the best feature of the Leesa mattress is how comfortable it is.

The main reason for this is the memory foam that makes up the middle layer which can make you feel like you are sleeping on a cloud.

This is because it molds and contours to your body as you lay down on it giving you a weightless feel.

And this will cut out the need for any tossing and turning during the night.

Which will help you drift off into a deep and restorative sleep, allowing your body to heal and repair itself overnight.

However, if you do need to move around on the mattress the top layer of LSA200 foam makes it much easier than on regular memory foam mattresses.

This is because it's springy and stops you from sinking in and getting stuck in the memory foam.

Also this top layer is breathable as it's designed to allow air to flow through, which is great for keeping you cooler during the night.

However, as with all memory foam mattresses the Leesa mattress may still feel hot to sleep on for some people.

And finally the foam of the mattress is covered by a polyester/lycra blend cover that is really soft and comfortable to lay on.

So the Leesa mattress is among the best for comfort as far as I'm concerned.

Pros & Cons

PROS

  • It's a really comfortable mattress to sleep on.
  • The 3 layers of foam provide a good mix of comfort and support.
  • Is cooler to sleep on than regular memory foam mattresses.
  • It's made with CeriPUR-US approved foam, so healthy to sleep on.
  • While also being hypo-allergenic and fire retardant.
  • Comes with a 100-day free trial and 10-year warranty.
  • Delivered directly to your door.
  • Which? Best Buy rated.
  • Made by an ethical company that donate 1 mattress to charity for each 10 that they sell.

CONS

  • Doesn't provide the same level of support as latex mattresses.
  • May be too soft for those who like to sleep on a firmer mattress.
  • Can still get hot at times even with the airflow of the top layer.
  • Polyester/lycra cover can't be removed for cleaning (needs to be spot cleaned instead).

What's The Verdict?

All in all I'd have no hesitation in recommending the Leesa mattress to anyone with back pain who prefers sleeping on a softer mattress.

As even though it lacks a bit in support, it can still give you great pressure relieving qualities.

And it was awarded a Which? Best Buy rating with them saying that it was one of the best mattresses they'd tested in recent years.

Which is heady praise indeed!

So if you're after a softer and more comfortable mattress than the firmer ones designed for people with bad backs, then the Leesa mattress is a great option.

The Amerisleep AS2 Mattress

Features

  • 12" thick, medium-firm memory foam mattress.
  • Contains 3 different layers of high quality foam with an open cell structure.
  • The Bio-Pur memory foam is breathable.
  • Comes with a polyester/celliant blend cover.
  • Made using eco-friendly materials and manufacturing.
  • 100-night free trial.
  • 20-year warranty.

Comfort

  • Has a firmer feel than traditional memory foam mattresses, so may not suit someone who prefers a softer one.
  • However, the memory foam still molds to your body, cushioning you and relieving pressure.
  • The memory foam has an open cell structure that makes it breathable and cooler to sleep on.

Support

  • It recovers it's shape faster than traditional memory foam, providing more support.
  • The firm transition layer stops you sinking too far into the memory foam.
  • This transition layer is also zoned to give you support where you need it.
  • The bottom base layer provides solid support and stability.
  • It's also claimed that the celiant blend cover turns body heat into pain relieving infra-red light!

The Amerisleep AS2 mattress is a medium-firm, eco-friendly, memory foam mattress that provides a good level of support along with a cooling and comfortable sleeping experience.

And it's slightly firmer to sleep on than you might expect from memory foam.

This is because the combination of foam used is denser than many other memory foam mattresses on the market.

How It's Made Up

The Amerisleep AS2 mattress is 12" thick and made up of 3 layers of foam and covered with a polyester/celliant blend material.

  • The top layer of this mattress is 2" thick and made with Bio-Pur memory foam that has an open cell structure for comfort.
  • Underneath this is a 3" layer of polyfoam that is firm and zoned so you get extra support and pressure relief in areas where you need it.
  • Then there is the 7" base layer of high-density foam which gives the mattress it's support and stability.

Why It's Good For Your Back

The two layers of dense foam underneath the top memory foam layer gives the Amerisleep AS2 mattress a medium firmness.

And this is great for your back, as sleeping on a medium-firm mattress is widely regarded to be the best option for keeping it healthy.

So let's look at exactly what this mattress will do for your back.

Firstly the top layer of Bio-Pur memory foam is great for cushioning your body as you sleep, which relieves pressure and strain.

And although this layer is soft, the transition layer of foam beneath it is firm and will stop you from sinking in too far.

This transition layer also gives the mattress an element of springiness which pushes back against your body weight and provides support.

This will help you to keep your spine in alignment and your sleeping posture healthy throughout the night.

The transition layer of foam is zoned, meaning it gives you more support where you need it such as under your shoulders, hips, and lower back.

This is a great as it helps to stop any pressure points from developing.

And the base layer of high-density foam will give you support and stability as you sleep.

Finally, the celliant used in the blend of materials for the cover is said to turn your body heat into infrared light.

And this has been shown to increase blood flow and circulation.

Which is great for your back as it helps your body to deliver the oxygen and nutrients to your damaged muscles that they need to heal and repair.

So the Amerisleep AS2 mattress does a very commendable job of providing support for your back.

How Comfortable Is It?

Being a memory foam mattress, the Amerisleep AS2 mattress is a really comfortable one to sleep on.

However, it is firmer than traditional memory foam.

And this may make it uncomfortable for some, especially side sleepers.

But for those that don't mind a firmer feel, the AS2 has plenty going for it in the comfort department.

As the memory foam top layer is soft and molds to the contours of your body as you lie down on it.

Which relieves pressure and tension and gives you an elevated feeling.

This can send you off into a deeper and more restorative sleep during the night as it eliminates the need for constant tossing and turning.

However, if you do need to change positions the Bio-Pur memory foam of the top layer makes it easy to move around in bed and not get stuck.

And this mattress also sleeps cool, as the open cell structure makes it 5 times more breathable than traditional memory foam.

While the transition layer of foam has a contoured design which allows air to flow through it, which also keeps the mattress cool.

Also the polyester/celliant blend cover is soft to the touch and comfortable to lie down on.

Which all adds up to a cool and comfortable night's sleep.

So if you don't mind the firmness, you should be very comfortable sleeping on the Amerisleep AS2 mattress.

Pros & Cons

PROS

  • Provides a better level of support than traditional memory foam mattresses.
  • The Bio-Pur foam is 5 times more breathable than traditional memory foam, making it cooler to sleep on.
  • Foam recovers shape quickly giving better support and making it easier to move around on.
  • The transition layer is zoned providing great pressure relief.
  • While the celliant cover turns body heat into infra-red light, which improves circulation.
  • The foams used are made from natural products and manufactured in an eco-friendly way.
  • It's well made, durable and long-lasting.
  • Comes with a 100-day free trial and 20-year conditional warranty.

CONS

  • May be too firm for those who prefer a softer memory foam mattress.
  • Provides good support but not as much as a latex mattress can.
  • Can give off an odour initially, although this should fade within a week.

What's The Verdict?

I'd say the Amerisleep AS2 mattress is a good choice for people with back pain that want the feel of memory foam but with more support.

As this mattress does a great job of supporting your back underneath the memory foam, which can keep it healthy.

Although it still won't match the back support you'd get from a latex mattress, and it'll feel firmer than traditional memory foam.

But if you don't mind that it can give you a really comfortable, relaxing, and supportive night's sleep.
