The Best Gaming Chair To Call Game Over For Back Pain

Do you find that nagging aches and pains in your back are ruining your whole gaming experience? If so do something about it by getting yourself an ergonomic and supportive gaming chair.

Playing your favourite video games is a great way to unwind after a hard days graft on site.

Whether you are scoring the winning goal on FIFA or running over pedestrians in GTA5 it can really take your mind off things and bring you a lot of enjoyment.

It also keeps your mind and reflexes sharp and the relaxing effect it can bring to your body is great for helping your muscles to heal and recover ready for work the next day.

However one thing that can ruin your fun when on a marathon gaming session is back pain.

And this is an all too common problem that affects gamers the world over.

This happens for a variety of reasons but mainly because our bodies don't like being sat down in the same position for hours on end.

And especially in chairs that offer no support for your back.

Which is where buying a good quality gaming chair can really help.

As these chairs are ergonomically adjustable, provide good lumbar support, and encourage you to maintain a healthy sitting posture as you play.

All of which will work wonders for taking away that nagging back pain.

And in this guide I'll review and recommend the following 3 chairs for you:

So if you've ever considered getting yourself a gaming chair you might find the one for you here.

Why Do You Get Back Pain From Gaming?

This should be fun not painful.

As any gamer knows once you become absorbed in the action hours can fly past in the blink of an eye.

But while this can be great fun, the addictive gameplay can also cause you to experience back pain.

This is because when you are gaming you are sat in the same position for such a long time.

And this is something your body hates!

Because our bodies are designed to move.

And it's through movement and staying active that our muscles, bones and organs stay fit and healthy.

However when you're sat down playing your favourite game your body remains inactive and this can lead to the development of lower back pain.

There are 3 reasons why this happens:

  • Your vertebrae become compressed while seated leading to a weakening of your spinal discs over time.
  • Your core muscles that support your back remain inactive and weaken meaning your back gets less support.
  • Sitting in an uncomfortable chair or one without lumbar support can force you to sit with a poor posture which places extra pressure on your spine.

And sitting can also have the knock on effect of giving you posture problems and pulling your spine out of alignment when you're not playing too.

Which will make life even harder on your back and put it under even greater strain.

But while all this sounds like a total disaster don't despair because there are ways to avoid these pitfalls which I'll explain further on.

And there are also some ways that gaming can actually be good for your back.

Playing Video Games Can Also Help To Reduce Back Pain

Back pain? What back pain?

Ok I know I've been solely focusing on the doom and gloom of gaming for your back up till now.

And you're probably already sick of people telling you that playing video games is a waste of your time.

So the last thing you need is me telling you to quit gaming and take up another hobby instead.

Well you're in luck because I'm not going to do that.

As getting lost in a Call of Duty mission can also really help to reduce your back pain.

And the reason for that is distraction.

Because by focusing on the game you are distracting your brain away from the pain signals your body is sending.

And by doing this you can lower their intensity and in turn feel less pain.

This works so well because our brains have a limited capacity to take in an overwhelming amount of sensory information both within us and around us.

So it has to automatically give priority to certain information that it deems most important so it doesn't become overloaded.

And unfortunately pain always gets top billing because it's one of the body's ways of alerting your brain to danger.

So you need to consciously give it something else to think about instead so that the pain signals can't get through.

And for a gamer there is no better way than getting absorbed in your favourite game.

Also doing something you enjoy will have the added benefit of releasing feel-good endorphins which are the body's natural painkiller.

A win-win situation!

So you don't need to give up gaming to get rid of back pain.

You just need to learn a few ways to minimise the risks and a good place to start is by investing in a supportive gaming chair.

The Best Gaming Chairs For Preventing Back Pain

best gaming chair for back pain

As a gamer you are no doubt up to date with all the latest technological advancements, gadgets, games and accessories.

And staying this up to date probably costs you a small fortune right?

You're not alone there. Gaming is an expensive hobby!

However while most people don't mind shelling out for the latest games and hardware they tend to overlook the thing they end up using the most.

Which is the chair they sit their backsides on while playing.

And this is a big mistake.

Because not only can the right chair make your whole gaming experience more comfortable and enjoyable it can also help to keep your body healthier too.

So when looking for the best gaming chair for you and your back you need to make sure:

  • It's fully adjustable (armrests and height especially).
  • Has good lumbar support.
  • Contours to your spine and helps you to maintain a healthy 'S' curve as you sit.
  • Contains durable, supportive and high quality padding.
  • Is comfortable enough to sit in during long gaming sessions.

A chair that takes care of all of the above will go a long way in eliminating back, neck and shoulder pain and stiffness.

And for this reason I'm going to steer clear of recommending rocker-style gaming chairs and instead stick to PC-style gaming chairs.

Because while rockers are comfortable they are not the best for your back.

PC-style gaming chairs on the other hand are more ergonomic, offer greater support and allow you to maintain a healthy posture as you play.

I've selected two great chairs at the higher end of the market and also one at the mid-range point so you can pick one at your price point.

But I've purposely steered clear of any 'budget' options as these chairs tend to lack in quality and be more trouble than they're worth.

Seriously you wouldn't buy inferior gear for your consoles or PCs so don't do it with your chair either as you won't get the true benefits.

So I'll begin with my top choice which is the AKRacing Pro X Gaming Chair.

  • Built-in lumbar support curve to keep you in a healthy posture.
  • Also comes with lumbar and headrest pillows.
  • Made of high-density foam that stays supportive.
  • 5 star aluminium castor base to spread the weight evenly as you sit.

Features

  • Made of premium faux leather for comfort and durability.
  • Durable steel frame.
  • 3D armrests that are fully adjustable.
  • Class 4 gaslift makes it easy to adjust the height.
  • Tilt and lock mechanism from 90 to 180 degrees.
  • Wide frame chair great for larger people.

Support and Warranty

  • 10-year warranty on the frame and 5-year warranty on the chair itself.

Why Is It Good For Your Back?

The AKRacing Pro X gaming chair is a fantastic choice for keeping your back healthy and happy while playing your favourite games.

Firstly it comes with a contoured chair back which is designed to support the natural curve of your spine.

AKRacing Pro-X Luxury XL Gaming Chair with High Backrest, Recliner, Swivel, Tilt, Rocker and Seat Height Adjustment Mechanisms with 5/10 warranty White

This will help you to maintain a healthy 'S' curve in your spine as you sit and ease the pressure and strain on your lower back.

And if that isn't enough you also get a lumbar support cushion that you can place between the back of the chair and your lower back to provide even more support for your spine.

The ergonomics on this chair are really good as well.

Seat height is easily adjustable so you can position it so your feet can remain flat on the floor taking pressure off your lower back.

And the 3D armrests can be adjusted up and down, forward and back, and rotated inwards and outwards so you can take the strain off your shoulders too.

The foam padding is another plus for your back.

It's high-density and fairly firm offering good support.

And it's made to hold it's shape for many years meaning you'll continue to get great support and comfort for your back.

AKRacing Pro-X Luxury XL Gaming Chair with High Backrest, Recliner, Swivel, Tilt, Rocker and Seat Height Adjustment Mechanisms with 5/10 warranty White

There is also a tilt mode which is great.

When it's in it's normal position the chair will hold you at a 90 degree angle and this is just where you want to be when gaming.

However you also have the option to tilt backwards and lock the chair at any angle upto 180 degrees.

AKRacing Pro-X Luxury XL Gaming Chair with High Backrest, Recliner, Swivel, Tilt, Rocker and Seat Height Adjustment Mechanisms with 5/10 warranty White

This can be great as changing the angle helps to relax your tight muscles and relieve some of the pressure that has built up in your lower back as you've been playing.

And you can even have a nice nap in the reclined position to recharge your batteries!

So if you want a gaming chair that provides plenty of back support, comfort and adjustable options this chair is where it's at.

Other Cool Features

The video above gives you a great overview of what you are getting with the AKRacing Pro X chair.

And one feature I really like about it is the wide frame which means it is perfect for taller and bigger people (holding up to 330lbs).

This also means you won't feel constricted or penned in like you can in some other gaming chairs.

And as this chair is extremely well-made the steel frame is very durable.

In fact they are so confident in the build quality they offer a 10-year warranty on the frame and a 5-year warranty on chair parts which is fantastic.

And there are a few other nice touches to mention.

The high-grade faux leather material feels nice to sit on and looks great too.

AKRacing Pro-X Luxury XL Gaming Chair with High Backrest, Recliner, Swivel, Tilt, Rocker and Seat Height Adjustment Mechanisms with 5/10 warranty White

And while the high-density foam that makes up the chair can feel a bit hard at first, once you get used to it it will feel really comfortable.

Finally there is a 5-point aluminium castor base which will give you stability and spread the pressure evenly as you sit taking the strain off your back, neck and shoulders.

Summary

In summary I really like the AKRacing Pro X gaming chair for helping to relieve back pain.

It provides a great support for your back and you can adjust it to fit you perfectly which makes it easier to maintain a healthy sitting posture.

The foam padding is supportive and holds it's shape well.

And it's comfortable to sit in too which will allow you to relax and enjoy your game.

All in all a great chair that will allow you to focus fully on what is most important....the action on the screen.

DXRacer Tank Series Gaming Chair

$$$$

DXRacer Tank Series DOH/TS29/NE Big and Tall Chair Racing Bucket Seat Office Chair Gaming Chair Ergonomic Computer Chair Esports Desk Chair Executive Chair Furniture with Pillows (Black/Green)

Good for the Back?

  • High-density foam padding provides firm support.
  • Has a high backrest to support your neck and upper spine.
  • Also comes with lumbar and headrest pillows.
  • 5 point aluminium castor base to spread the weight evenly as you sit.

Features

  • Made of breathable polyurethane leather for comfort and durability.
  • Very durable steel frame.
  • 4D armrests that are fully adjustable.
  • Class 4 gas spring makes it easy to adjust the height.
  • Tilt and lock mechanism from 90 to 120 degrees.
  • Wide frame chair great for bigger people.

Support and Warranty

  • Lifetime warranty on the frame and 2-year warranty on parts.

Why Is It Good For Your Back?

The DXRacer is very similar to the AKRacing Pro X gaming chair in many ways and will also help to keep your back healthy as you sit in front of the screen.

However it is lacking the contoured chair back design of the AKRacing chair so you may need to work harder to maintain a healthy sitting posture.

The lumbar support cushion you get with this can help with that when placed between the back of the chair and your lower back.

Also the adjustable height of the chair makes it easy to position so your feet can remain flat on the floor taking some of the strain off your lower back.

And this chair comes with 4D armrests which can not only be adjusted up and down, forward and back, and rotated inwards and outwards, you can also move them from side to side as well.

This is great for taking the strain off your neck and shoulders which allows your upper body to relax while you play.

DXRacer Tank Series DOH/TS29/NE Big and Tall Chair Racing Bucket Seat Office Chair Gaming Chair Ergonomic Computer Chair Esports Desk Chair Executive Chair Furniture with Pillows (Black/Green)

The high-density foam in the chair back and seat offers firm support that will spread the pressure of gravity evenly throughout your body while you sit.

And this foam is durable so it'll hold it's shape even after years of use.

There is also a t-tilt mechanism although it only goes from a 90 degree angle to a 120 degree angle, unlike to 180 degrees like the AKRacing chair.

But this is still great for relieving pressure in your lower back and taking a break to relax mid-game (just maybe not as good for napping on!).

So while the DXRacer doesn't have as many plus points as the AKRacing chair for supporting your back it's still a great chair that will help you get rid of back pain as you play.

Other Cool Features

The video above will give you an idea of the size of the DXRacer Tank gaming chair.

And it really is a big one!

In fact you'll feel like you're sitting on a throne while using it.

It is one of the biggest gaming chairs you'll find on the market supporting people up to 6' 6" and 450lbs!

This is made possible because of the wide steel frame and the high backrest.

However if you are of the more petite variety then DXRacer have other styles of chairs better suited to smaller individuals which are also well worth checking out.

But the DXRacer Tank chair is extremely well-made and the steel frame is so durable they give you a lifetime warranty on it.

While the premium polyurethane leather that covers it feels comfortable and is breathable so you won't get too hot and sweaty while sitting on it.

DXRacer Tank Series DOH/TS29/NE Big and Tall Chair Racing Bucket Seat Office Chair Gaming Chair Ergonomic Computer Chair Esports Desk Chair Executive Chair Furniture with Pillows (Black/Green)

And the high-density mould shaping foam that makes up the chair is firm but becomes more comfortable once you get used to it.

Finally there is a 5-point aluminium castor base which will give you stability and spread the pressure evenly as you sit taking the strain off your back, neck and shoulders.

Summary

You won't be disappointed with the DXRacer Tank Series Gaming Chair.

It comes with a multitude of cool features and you can adjust it to fit you perfectly.

Plus it feels luxurious to sit in because of the amount of room you get and the quality of the polyurethane leather cover.

It doesn't provide as much specific support for your back as the AKRacing chair and is slightly more expensive which is why it's only runner up in this list.

However it still gives you more than enough support and comfort to make a real difference for your back on long gaming sessions.

Vertagear SL5000 Gaming Chair

$$

4GamerGear Vertagear S-Line SL5000 Racing Series Gaming Chair (Rev. 2) Oct. 2016 (Black/Red)

Good for the Back?

  • Made with high-density foam padding for great support.
  • Also comes with lumbar and headrest pillows.
  • High backrest for neck, shoulder and upper spine support.
  • Tilt mechanism allows you to rock in the chair keeping core muscles active.
  • 5 star aluminium alloy castor base to spread the weight evenly as you sit.

Features

  • Breathable PVC leather cover for comfort and durability.
  • Durable steel frame.
  • 4D armrests that are fully adjustable.
  • Class 4 gaslift to adjust seat height.
  • Tilt and lock mechanism from 80 to 140 degrees.

Support and Warranty

  • 10-year warranty on the frame and 2-year warranty on parts.

Why Is It Good For Your Back?

The Vertagear SL5000 gaming chair is a decent choice at the mid-range price point for getting rid of back pain while using your console or computer.

And while there is no built-in lumbar support it does still have a few great features that offer your back the support it needs.

Firstly the high-density foam padding in the seat and chair back is firm and able to provide great back support as you sit.

And you also get a lumbar support cushion that you can place between the back of the chair and your lower back to give you even more support and encourage you to maintain a healthy sitting posture.

The height of the seat can be easily adjusted so you can keep both feet flat on the floor as you play which takes pressure and strain off your lower spine.

And the 4D armrests can be adjusted up and down, forward and back, in and out and side to side so you can take the strain off your shoulders too.

There is also a tilt mechanism which allows you to adjust the tension and be able to rock backwards and forwards.

4GamerGear Vertagear S-Line SL5000 Racing Series Gaming Chair (Rev. 2) Oct. 2016 (Black/Red)

And this is great for your back as it keeps your back-supporting core muscles active while you sit which prevents them from weakening.

The chair also has a tilt and lock option that allows you to change the angle from anywhere between 80 and 140 degrees.

And this is great for relieving pressure on your back or just resting and relaxing for a bit.

So the lack of built in lumbar support in this chair is more than made up for by these other plus points.

Other Cool Features

The video above gives a really good overview of what the Vertagear SL5000 gaming chair is all about.

It's a really good looking chair that comes with a PVC leather covering that is breathable in the seat area to stop you from overheating.

And the steel frame is very solid and durable too and comes with a 10-year warranty.

4GamerGear Vertagear S-Line SL5000 Racing Series Gaming Chair (Rev. 2) Oct. 2016 (Black/Red)

The high-density foam that makes up the chair is firm and can feel uncomfortable at first.

But this offers great support, helps you to maintain a proper posture and will feel much nicer once you have been using it for a while.

The high backrest will also do a great job of supporting your neck, shoulders and upper spine which will help you to relax and enjoy your game.

Finally there is a 5-point aluminium alloy castor base which will give you stability and spread the pressure evenly as you sit taking the strain off your back, neck and shoulders.

However one thing to note is that this isn't as wide as the previous two chairs in this review so may not be suited to larger individuals.

It does still have a top weight limit of 330lbs but the width of the chair may mean that at close to this weight you may feel a bit constricted and uncomfortable.

Also the height of the chair is quite low even at it's maximum so it may not be the best fit for anyone 6ft plus.

Summary

Overall the Vertagear SL5000 is a great gaming chair for back support and helping you to maintain a healthy posture.

However it's not as wide and doesn't adjust as high as other chairs so may not be suitable for everyone.

But for those that fit within it's dimensions you get a really supportive chair that can help to improve your whole gaming experience.

Other Ways To Avoid Back Pain While Gaming

Now these 3 gaming chairs I've shown you in this article are all great and each one will be a big help for your back.

However just getting yourself a high quality gaming chair isn't going to be enough to avoid back pain.

You also need to learn and adopt some healthy habits that will protect your back while playing.

And the following 4 are the most crucial.

So try and incorporate them into your routine and see if it makes a difference.

Hit the Pause Button and Take Regular Microbreaks

Put the controller down and get your body moving every so often.

As I've already said the biggest problem for your back when playing games is the length of time you spend sitting in the same position.

However you can greatly reduce the negative effects of sitting for prolonged periods of time if you get into the habit of getting up and moving around for a few minutes every hour.

As taking these little 'microbreaks' from your controller can release the build up of pressure and tension in your body.

But just getting up out of your chair to make a coffee or grab a beer isn't enough.

You need to get your body moving to reawaken dormant muscles, decompress your vertebrae and get your blood circulating again.

So go for a little walk or practice a few stretches instead.

In fact stretching regularly is a great thing to do as it will make your more flexible, improve your posture and increase your circulation.

All of which will mean less strain on your back and less back pain for you.

The video below should give you a few ideas on which stretches you can do:

By getting into the habit of doing this regularly you can make a big difference to your whole experience of long gaming sessions.

So try not to get so absorbed in the action that you forget to stop once an hour as this will really help to keep your back in better shape.

Just remember that the pause button is for more than just taking a toilet break or getting some food to munch on!

Mix Things Up by Playing Active Games Too

Another way to relieve built-up muscle tension and get your blood circulating again is to take a break from your seat-based game and play a more active game instead.

This will have a similar effect to taking a microbreak and having a good stretch but will be more fun to do.

Devices like the Kinect Sensor for Xbox and the PlayStation Move make it possible to play active games and these can be based on fitness, sports or just fun.

So make use of them by working up a sweat for 20 minutes or so every so often.

You can then get back in your gaming chair and resume your serious gameplay with your body and mind fresh and ready to go again.

Plus it'll be good for your overall health too.

Stay Active Away From the Console

Speaking of your overall health, staying active is a fantastic way to keep your back strong and pain free.

And it can really help your back to endure long gaming marathons.

This is because by getting regular exercise you will:

  • Strengthen the muscles which support your back.
  • Increase your flexibility meaning less muscle tightness.
  • Improve your circulation which helps to keep your muscles and tissues healthy.
  • Release endorphins which allows your body to fight pain naturally.

So all great reasons for using your time away from your console to get some good exercise in.

And you don't need to go for gold and overdo things either.

Studies have shown that just 30 minutes of moderate exercise 3-4 times per week was enough to reduce pain levels in people with chronic lower back pain.

Just make sure you are getting a mixture of stretching, strengthening and aerobic exercise and you're golden.

As a strong and healthy back will be able to withstand much more in your gaming chair than a weak one.

And the added bonus is that getting regular exercise will help to improve your mood and concentration levels too.

Which means it could even improve your skill level and gaming performance!

For a list of 9 activities that have been shown to be safe and beneficial for people with back pain click here.

Maintain a Healthy Sitting Posture

It's so easy to get so absorbed in the game that you don't even realise how bad your sitting posture has become.

Whether that is by curling up on the couch, sitting on the floor or instinctively leaning forward to get closer to the screen it can put your back under much more pressure and strain.

So you really need to become aware of how you sit as you play.

Now hopefully using a good quality gaming chair like the ones featured in this article will go a long way to fixing this problem.

But you also need to make a conscious effort to get into the habit of sitting in a healthy posture.

Some pointers to remember are:

  • Try to maintain a slight arch in your lower back rather than allowing it to flatten against the back of the chair.
  • Sit with a slight 'S' shaped curve in your spine rather than a 'C' shaped curve.
  • Keep your feet flat on the ground and your knees bent at a 90 degree angle to take the pressure off your lower back.
  • Don't slouch or lean forward.
  • Position your monitor or screen straight ahead of you and at a height where you can look straight at it rather than down.

Now some of these things may feel strange and uncomfortable at first but your body will soon adapt to them.

And for some more ideas check out the video below:

Rounding Up

Gaming is a great hobby that can sharpen your mind, reflexes and problem solving skills as well as help you to relax and unwind.

And it can also do a great job of distracting you from back pain.

However sitting in the same position for endless hours of gameplay can also cause havoc for your back and give you nagging aches and pains that spoil your whole experience.

So to avoid this you need to learn and adopt healthy habits that will help you cope with the dangers of sitting.

And you also need to make sure you are using a gaming chair that is back friendly.

Because by using an ergonomic gaming chair with great back support you can maintain a healthy sitting posture and take the pressure and strain off your lower back, neck and shoulders.

So I hope the 3 chairs I've recommended in this article will solve this problem for you or at least give you an idea of what to look for.

After all the only 'Game Over' I want to see when playing is for the pain in my back!
