By offering medium-firm support within a memory foam mattress does the Amerisleep AS2 mattress cover both bases of comfort and support for your back?

Getting the right mix of comfort and support in a mattress can be a challenge.

And this can put people off buying a memory foam mattress.

However there are some memory foam mattresses that buck this trend and the Amerisleep AS2 is one of those.

What's Inside The Amerisleep AS2 Mattress?

The Amerisleep AS2 mattress is a 12" thick medium-firm mattress made up of 3 layers of foam and covered with a polyester/celliant blend material.

And it's constructed as follows.

Top Comfort Layer

The top layer of this mattress is 2" thick and made with Bio-Pur memory foam.

And with a 4lbs density and an ILD (indentation load deflection) of 10 it's very soft.

So this is where you will get the initial comfort from the mattress as the foam moulds to the contours of your body.

And this Bio-Pur memory foam is made with an open cell structure that allows air to pass through it.

Which makes it 5 times more breathable than traditional memory foam and will keep you cooler during the night.

Transition Layer

Underneath this is a 3" layer of polyfoam that acts as a transition between the comfort of the memory foam top layer and the support of the high-density foam base layer.

This layer is much firmer (1.65lbs density and ILD of 40) and zoned so you get extra support and pressure relief in areas where you need it such as the shoulders and lower back.

And this firmness also helps to stop you sinking into the memory foam too much.

Like the top layer it's also designed to allow air to pass through it, so it also helps to keep the mattress cool to sleep on.

Bottom Base Layer

The 7" base layer of high-density foam is what gives the mattress it's support and stability.

And with a 1.8lbs density and an ILD of 35 it's a very firm foam.

Which allows the two layers above to work their magic.

It will also prevent the mattress from sagging over time which can be a problem in other memory foam mattresses.

The Cover

These 3 layers of foam are covered with a soft and comfortable feeling polyester/celliant blend material.

And being made with celliant is great for keeping you cool as well comfortable.

As Amerisleep claim that it's made with 13 thermoreactive minerals that convert your body heat into infrared light.

Which sounds a bit space-age for a mattress cover but if it keeps you cooler it's all good!

Why It's Good For Your Back

Does your current mattress leave you feeling like this in the mornings?

Memory foam is not usually your first port of call when it comes to looking for a mattress to provide extra support for your back.

Because traditionally memory foam mattresses tend to offer more comfort than they do support.

However the Amerisleep AS2 mattress is different.

Because the two layers of dense foam underneath the top memory foam layer gives this one a much firmer feel.

Which is great for your back as sleeping on a medium-firm mattress is widely regarded to be the best option for keeping your back healthy.

So let's look at exactly what the AS2 will give your back.

Firstly the top layer of Bio-Pur memory foam will mould to you as you sleep giving you a weightless feel, which is great for relieving pressure.

And although this layer is soft, the transition layer of foam beneath it is firm and will stop you from sinking in too far.

This transition layer also provides an element of springiness into the mattress which allows it to push back against your body weight and provide support.

Which will help to keep your spine in alignment and your sleeping posture good which will also relieve pressure and tension.

However while this 'push back' effect is good, it's not as good as you'd get on a latex or inner-spring mattress.

The transition layer is also zoned meaning that it offers you more support where you need it such as under your shoulders, hips and lower back.

This is great as it helps to spread the pressure evenly while you sleep and stops any pressure points from developing.

And the base layer of high-density foam does a top job of giving you support and stability throughout the night.

This will also stop the mattress from sagging over time which can be a major cause of back pain (and a real annoyance!).

Finally the celliant used in the blend of materials for the cover is said to turn your body heat into infrared light.

And this has been shown to increase blood flow and circulation.

Which is great for your back as it helps your body to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your damaged muscles to help them heal and repair while you sleep.

So while the Amerisleep AS2 is not as supportive as a latex or inner-spring mattress for your back, it still does a pretty good job.

And when you add to that the extra comfort the memory foam gives you then it could be a nice trade off.

How Comfortable Is It To Sleep In?

Now as you'd expect from a memory foam mattress, the Amerisleep AS2 mattress can be a comfortable one to sleep on.

However if you are expecting one of the softer feeling memory foam mattresses you may be disappointed.

Because the AS2 is pretty firm.

And that may make it a bit uncomfortable for some, especially side sleepers.

But for those that don't mind a firmer and more supportive feel, the AS2 has plenty going for it in the comfort department.

Firstly the memory foam top layer is soft and moulds to the contours of your body as you lie down on it.

Which helps to relieve pressure and tension.

And gives you an elevated and weightless feeling.

Which can really help you to get into a deeper and more restorative sleep during the night as it eliminates the need for constant tossing and turning.

However if you do need to change positions the AS2 has you covered.

As the Bio-Pur memory foam recovers it's shape far more quickly than traditional memory foam making it easier to move around in and not get stuck.

And this mattress also does a great job of staying cooler than traditional memory foam mattresses.

As the Bio-Pur memory foam has an open cell structure which makes it 5 times more breathable than traditional memory foam.

And the transition layer has a contoured design which allows air to flow through it which helps to keep the mattress cool.

Also the polyester/celliant blend cover is designed to wick away heat and moisture from your body as you sleep.

While also being soft to the touch and comfortable to lie down on.

Which all adds up to a cool and comfortable night's sleep.

So if you don't mind a firmer feel you should experience plenty of comfort sleeping on the Amerisleep AS2 mattress.

>> The Back On Site Verdict <<

So would I recommend the Amerisleep AS2 mattress for people with back pain?

I'd say overall it's a good choice if you are the type that enjoys a memory foam feel to your mattress.

As this mattress does a great job of giving you support underneath the memory foam which can keep your back healthy as well as comfortable.

Which for a memory foam mattress is quite rare, so the AS2 is one of the best around for that.

Although it should be noted that it doesn't match the back support you'd get from a latex or inner-spring mattress.

And because it offers this support it will have a firmer feel to it than traditional memory foam.

But if you don't mind that it can give you a really comfortable, deep and cool night's sleep.

And help your back to get the rest it needs while keeping you supported and in alignment.

So if you want to keep the comfort of memory foam while also getting more support for your back in your new mattress don't hesitate to give the Amerisleep AS2 a try.
