My Review Of The Best Mattresses For Reducing Back Pain In 2017

best mattresses for back pain

If you've had any experience of mattress shopping in the past you'll know what a nightmare it can be.

You are bamboozled with far too many options right from the very start.

Do you want soft or firm?

Comfort or support?

Memory foam or latex?

Pocket spring or open coil?

Duck or goose feathers?!

"Aarghh, I just want a good night's kip!"

I hear you.

The problem is it's so difficult to know which one will be right for you.

And this process can be even harder for people like us with chronic lower back pain.

Because the truth is everyone's body is different.

We all need different things to be able to get a good night's sleep and wake up pain-free.

So to help you with this whole process I've written a guide of the 7 things you need to know to find the right mattress for your back which you can find here.

This is such an important thing to get right because sleeping on the wrong mattress can be a major cause of back pain.

In fact in a survey a whopping 95% of orthopaedic surgeons said they thought that the type of mattress used by their patients played a part in how well they managed their back pain (12).

And they have first hand experience!

So when you consider we spend a third of our lives in bed then you really need to make sure you get the right mattress that can help your back pain and improve your overall quality of life.

And I want to help you to do that in this review of what I consider to be the best mattresses for back pain currently on the market.

So read on and I'll review and recommend the following mattresses (click the links to go straight to that particular review):

The Best Mattresses For Back Pain

I've reviewed a selection of different mattresses here so that everyone can find one that suits them no matter what their needs and preferences are.

There are a couple of naturally made mattresses, one memory foam for comfort and one latex for support.

I've included a couple of the new breed of hybrid mattresses that have a combination of memory foam, latex and pocket springs to give you the best of all worlds.

And finally there are a couple of mattresses with a mixture of foams in them that aim to provide you with the perfect mix of comfort and support.

So whether you need a softer mattress that gives you extreme comfort or a firmer mattress that provides more support, they're all here.

(If you want to find out what the differences between these materials are then check out my guide here and I'll explain it all in detail.)

I've also only included mattresses here that have a free home trial period (from 60 to 120 days).

This is so important as you'll be able to give them a really good test to make sure they are the right one for you without being obligated to buy them.

So let's get started with my top choice, the Zenhaven natural latex mattress by Saatva.

  • Latex provides greater support than memory foam.
  • Good support extends to the edges of the mattress too.

Summary

The Zenhaven mattress by Saatva is made from 100% natural Talalay latex and brings you superior support, comfort and pressure relief all wrapped up in a safe, healthy and eco-friendly package.

This one is my top pick for mattresses for back pain because the natural latex provides the best mix of support and comfort.

And this mattress contains natural latex throughout.

Which makes it healthier, safer, more durable and a higher quality than synthetic latex mattresses.

And finally it's great value as it's only sold directly online which means the middlemen and department stores are cut out of the equation.

Eco-friendly and Natural

The Zenhaven mattress is as green as a latex mattress can be.

The latex used throughout is made from rubber tree sap that is sustainably harvested.

It is then mixed with a small amount of non-toxic ingredients to turn it into the Talalay latex (which is unavoidable) but apart from that the process is 100% natural.

In fact Zenhaven's Talalay latex is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified meaning it's free from toxins.

And on top of this the manufacturing process is eco-friendly too being entirely water-based.

This means that no harmful gasses or byproducts are produced during the process which is great for the environment.

And everything is made in America rather than being imported so there is less of a carbon footprint.

The quilted cover is also eco-friendly being made from organic cotton and filled with 100% organic flame retardant New Zealand wool.

So you'll have nothing on your environmental conscious by buying this one!

And this natural construction of the latex also makes it an extremely safe and healthy mattress to sleep on.

It won't give off a bad chemical odour like certain memory foam mattresses can.

And it is naturally hypoallergenic and resistent to microbes, bacteria, mold and dust-mites making it great for people prone to allergies.

Also it doesn't contain any VOCs (volatile organic compounds) or other harmful substances that can be found in other foam mattresses.

This is important for your health as prolonged exposure to VOCs can cause you many health issues such as allergies, asthma, headaches, eye, nose and throat irritation, and damage to your liver and kidneys.

So the Zenhaven will work wonders for keeping you and the indoor air quality of your bedroom healthy.

As well as protecting the environment.

Composition

So how is the Zenhaven mattress made up?

There are four layers of latex in total along with a quilted cover at the top and bottom of the mattress.

Now this mattress is designed so it has two different firmness levels depending on which way up it is.

The top and bottom layers of latex are the comfort layers and both are 1.5" thick.

Each have 5 zones of differing density within the latex which make them firm in certain places and softer in others.

The difference is that each one sits on a supporting layer of latex that have different firmess levels.

So the second layer of latex in the mattress is 3" thick and carries a an ILD (indentation load deflection) rating of 25-29 which gives it a medium firmness.

Whilst the third layer of latex is also 3" thick but has an ILD rating of 30-34 making it a medium-firm firmness.

This means that if you sleep on the top layer of the mattress you'll get a soft to medium support level.

However if you flip it over and sleep on the bottom layer the mattress will have medium to firm support level.

Both top and bottom layers are covered with a quilted organic cotton cover which is filled with 100% organic New Zealand wool.

And both the latex and cover are designed to be breathable to allow air and moisture to pass through and keep you cooler as you sleep.

Support

The Zenhaven mattress provides a fantastic level of support.

The natural Talalay latex is great at responding to every movement of your body as you sleep, both relieving pressure and keeping your spine fully supported and aligned.

And it has far more spring, bounce and support than any memory foam mattress.

This mattress is a 2-in-1 design with one side giving firmer support than the other.

And I'd recommend everyone to use this medium-firm side of this mattress as it is 18% firmer than the softer side.

Because medium-firmness has been shown to be better for people with back pain (13).

Also the top comfort layer of latex on this side is really supportive as it has 5 different zones all providing different levels of support.

And the two middle layers of latex will provide the stability, push back and firmness that will stop you sinking too far into the mattress.

So they'll be no sagging or sinking, just an elevated sensation.

And this support even extends to the sides of the mattress so it's a good choice if you often find yourself on the very edge of the bed during the night too.

Comfort

So from a support point of view this mattress is great. But is it comfortable too?

You bet it is.

The 5 different zones of the comfort layer mean that it will feel firm where you need it to be firm but softer where you don't.

And the Talalay latex has a good amount of spring and bounce that will let you sink in just enough but not too much.

This makes movement in the bed a lot easier than with a memory foam mattress and gives you an elevated, weightless feeling rather than a sinking one.

Which is great as this will take the pressure off of your pressure points while also keeping you correctly aligned, no matter what sleeping position you prefer.

And this will allow your body to relax and drift into a deeper and more restorative sleep.

So you'll get a great sleep on this as well as getting plenty of support.

This pressure relief also means that your blood circulation will improve during the night.

Which helps your body to repair itself as your muscles can get the oxygen and nutrients they need more readily.

And the 2-in-1 design means that if the medium-firm side of the mattress is too hard for you, you can flip it over and sleep on the soft-medium side instead.

So everyone should find a comfort level that suits them with the Zenhaven mattress.

Also Talalay latex is cooler to sleep on than Dunlop latex or memory foam as it doesn't retain heat, so this is a great mattress for those that struggle with overheating during the night.

The open cell structure means air flows constantly through it giving you a cool and comfortable sleep.

Plus the organic cotton quilted cover also helps the mattress stay cool and breathable as the wool inside it naturally pulls heat away from the sleeper and absorbs any moisture.

And being full of wool it's soft and comfortable to lay down on too.

All in all an extremely comfortable mattress to sleep on.

Durability

Talalay latex is extremely resilient, durable and long-lasting.

So you'll find this mattress won't sag or give way even after many years worth of use.

In fact this one especially has been built to last with Zenhaven claiming it will withstand 20-years of normal usage.

And they've backed this with a 20-year warranty, although this comes with conditions as follows:

They'll replace it at no cost within the first 2 years, and after 2 years will come to your home and repair it for free.

However after that you have to pay a percentage of the cost of the mattress if you want to get it replaced (3-5 years - 25%, 5-10 years - 50%, 11-20 years - 75%).

But don't let that put you off too much as the likelihood of this mattress going wrong any time soon is very low.

Free trial

You can trial your Zenhaven mattress at home for 120 days before making a final decision on whether to keep it or not.

This is great as after 3 months you'll know for sure if you've made a good choice for your back or not.

And if you do decide you want to return it then Zenhaven will pick it up from you and give you a full refund (minus the initial delivery charge of $99).

Which I think they could have waived too to be honest.

Still it's good to be safe in the knowledge that you can buy one of these and not be obligated to keep it if it doesn't suit you.

But all in all I think people that suffer with back pain will find this to be a brilliant choice of mattress.

Not only is it extremely supportive, it's also really comfortable too.

And on top of that it's natural, healthy, safe, eco-friendly and long-lasting.

So if you've always wanted to try a latex mattress to help your back pain this is the one I'd recommend going for.

Pros and Cons

Summary

The Essentia Classic 8 is a 100% natural mattress that brings you the comfort of top quality memory foam alongside the great support provided by Dunlop-processed latex.

Now before I begin I have to say that this is the most expensive mattress I'm reviewing here.

And for this reason it may not be suitable for everyone.

But if you're willing to make a long-term investment in your back health and sleep quality then this mattress is a great option.

100% Natural

So why is it so expensive?

It's because of the natural process involved that makes it the world's only completely natural memory foam mattress.

The Essentia latex based foam is made using hevea milk (sap from rubber trees) combined with essential oils, water and plant extracts.

This is then taken through a 'baking' process and moulded into the natural memory foam top layer that makes this mattress so comfortable (to find out more click here).

But what is the advantage in having an all natural foam mattress?

Well regular memory foam is man-made with a mixture of synthetics and petroleum-based chemicals.

This means that in your bedroom they emit various levels of toxic fumes called VOCs (volatile organic compounds) depending on their quality and construction.

And prolonged exposure to VOCs can cause you many health issues such as allergies, asthma, headaches, eye, nose and throat irritation, and damage to your liver and kidneys.

Seriously bad news!

Nowadays most high quality mattresses will be Greenguard certified (as this one is) which means they test low for VOC emissions.

But being totally naturally-made the Essentia Classic 8 gives off no chemical or harmful gasses.

So it's the healthiest mattress you can find in terms of indoor air quality, which means you can be assured of a healthy, safe and allergy-free sleep.

Well worth paying a bit extra for.

Composition

So how is the Essentia Classic 8 mattress made up?

There are five layers in total which all combine to give you a great night's kip.

The top layer is a soft, organic Zebrano cotton cover which you can remove and wash.

This is designed to allow air and moisture to pass through it which keeps you cooler as you sleep.

Underneath this is a bucaneve wrap which works as a thin, protective layer to prevent friction and wear to the actual mattress.

Then we come to the actual meat of the mattress.

Firstly there is a 2" top layer of natural memory foam which moulds to your body and makes it so comfortable.

And underneath that is a 6" base layer of natural latex that has been processed using the Dunlop method.

This provides the support and will react and push back against every movement you make but without being bouncy.

Finally there is a dovetailed cotton base to the mattress that stops it from shifting and moving during the night.

Support

So let's talk about the support it provides.

It has a medium-firm feel (5.25 lbs density) which is great because medium-firm mattresses have been shown to provide the best amount of support for people with back pain (13).

The base layer of the mattress is made up of 6" of superior quality natural latex that is processed using the Dunlop method.

This creates a firmer feel than Talalay processed latex.

And this latex pushes back and reacts against every movement as you sleep, which prevents you from sinking in too much with the top layer of memory foam.

So you get far more support than you would on a purely memory foam mattress.

Comfort

But that's not to say that this extra support makes this mattress any less comfortable.

Far from it.

The 2" layer of natural memory foam that sits on top of the 6" of latex moulds to the contours of your body as you sleep.

This takes the pressure off of your pressure points, especially in your hips and shoulders.

And this pressure relief stops the need for tossing and turning during the night, allowing your body to relax and drift into a deeper and more restorative sleep.

In fact for pressure relief it's among the most comfortable in the world.

The Healthcare industry measure the comfort of a mattress by giving it a rating (mmHg) depending on how it reacts against pressure.

A rating of 32 mmHg and below is considered to be pressure-relieving.

The Essentia mattresses actually have an mmHg rating of 12.43 making them the best rated mattresses in the world for pressure relief.

So you'll get a great sleep on this as well as getting plenty of support.

This pressure relief also means that your blood circulation is increased during the night.

And this helps your body to restore and replenish as you sleep as your muscles can get the oxygen and nutrients they need to repair.

It's breathable too so it won't overheat like traditional memory foam mattresses can.

The Zebrano organic cotton cover is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified and allows air and moisture to pass through it.

And the natural memory foam is 80% more breathable than traditional memory foam.

Both of which means this mattress will feel cooler and fresher to sleep on.

However you need to be aware that that doesn't mean it never gets hot, just that there is less chance of heat retention with this one.

The natural memory foam will also regain it's shape 35% faster than traditional memory foam.

This makes it easier to move around in and get out of.

Durability

And finally due to the natural composition it's extremely durable too.

In tests it was found to only lose less than 1/4" of it's height after 10-years use which is superb.

And it comes with a 20-year warranty so you are fully covered and can view this mattress as a long-term purchase that will last you for years and years.

So all in all this Essentia mattress is a top choice that will provide you with a healthy sleeping experience, superior comfort and great support.

The downside is the high price which can make it out of most people's price range.

However if you are interested in what you've read keep an eye on the Essentia website as they constantly run cash back and 10-20% off offers on their range of mattresses.

Which can make a big difference to the purchase price.

Pros and Cons

  • Provides a medium-firmness that is perfect for people with back pain.
  • 100% natural memory foam top layer is great for safety, quality and health.
  • Among the most comfortable mattresses on the market and great for pressure relief.
  • Dunlop processed latex base means you have great support during the night.
  • Moulds to your body but pushes back rather than letting you sink in.
  • Extremely durable and long-lasting.
  • More breathable and cooler than other memory foam mattresses.
  • Hypo-allergenic.
  • 60 day money back guarantee so you can give it a good road test.
  • The all natural composition means this mattress is more expensive than other memory foam ones.
  • May be too soft for some who prefer a firmer latex mattress.

  • Top layer of foam is high density (3.75 lbs) which gives bounce and support.
  • Fully tested to be suitable for people up to 350 lbs.

Summary

The Sapira Hybrid mattress is a newcomer on the scene and has been developed to provide a luxurious mattress that also has a great level of support.

And it achieves this brilliantly.

By combining 1,000 individual pocket springs, memory foam and a high density foam top layer designed to mimic the support of latex, they have come up with a great mattress.

Made completely in the USA with the highest quality materials you can be assured of getting a great night's sleep on this one.

And by only selling their mattresses online they are cutting out the need for middlemen and partnerships with large department stores.

Which keeps the costs to you down and makes the Sapira much more affordable than similar quality mattresses in this range.

Composition

So how is the Sapira Hybrid mattress made up?

There are three layers in total which all combine to give you the support and comfort you need.

The top layer is made from a 1.5" thick high density foam (3.75 lbs per cbft) which has been hole-punched to allow air to flow through it.

This provides the initial level of support.

Underneath this is a 1.5" layer of memory foam (with a density of 4 lbs per cbft) which contours to your body providing pressure relief and comfort.

Then comes the 6" layer containing 1,000 individual steel pocket springs which brings the main support of the mattress.

And above and below the springs are 1" layers of stabilising foam which work to transition from the springs to the rest of the mattress.

This is all wrapped in a polyester/lycra blend cover which is breathable and keeps the mattress cool.

However one down side is that it can't be removed and washed, so you'll need to spot clean it instead.

All foams used within the mattress are CertiPUR-US certified meaning they are free from toxins.

Support

So what kind of support can you expect from the Sapira Hybrid mattress?

The short answer is very good!

The mattress has a medium-firm feel which has been shown to be the preferred firmness for people with back pain (13).

And the majority of this support comes from the 1,000 steel pocket springs which adjust to your every movement during the night.

This works great for keeping your spine in a good alignment no matter what sleeping position you end up in.

So this provides support to fit every individual and has been tested to be effective for people up to 350 lbs.

These springs are taken right to the edge of the mattress rather than being encased in foam, which gives the Sapira fantastic support even at the very edges of it.

And the top layer of foam on this mattress has been designed to match the bounce and responsiveness of latex.

This means you won't sink in too much and you'll stay supported as you sleep.

So all in all a great mattress from a support point of view.

Comfort

Now I'll start here by saying that because of the great support that this mattress gives it may feel too firm for some people who prefer the traditionally soft feel of memory foam.

But if you do like a slightly firmer sleeping surface then this one is really comfortable too.

The top layer of foam is springier than memory foam.

And while this means it isn't as soft, it does make it easier to move around in.

Also the pocket springs adapting to every movement you make feels good as you move around during the night.

But the main comfort here comes from the second layer of memory foam.

This will mould to the contours of your body and relieve any pressure which will allow you to get into a deeper and more restorative sleep.

And because of the extra support you won't sink in so much which will keep your spine aligned.

Which also helps to ward off any aches and pains in the morning.

And on top of this the Sapira mattress is designed to be far more breathable and thus cooler to sleep on than traditional memory foam.

First of all the memory foam layer is placed further down the mattress so you are not in direct contact with it.

This means it won't trap body heat as much.

And the top layer of foam is hole-punched to allow the air to pass through it, keeping you cooler as you sleep.

So if you're after a cool, comfortable, and pressure-relieving sleep the Sapira Hybrid stands up to the test.

Durability

This mattress has been made in the USA with high quality materials throughout so it will stand the test of time.

And for your peace of mind it comes with a 10-year warranty.

So you are fully protected and can get a replacement should anything go wrong.

Just be aware that this warranty will not cover you if you take the mattress outside of the United States.

Ethics

Being part of the Leesa group means that the Sapira Hybrid mattress is part of the same 1-in-10 programme as the Leesa mattress.

This means that they will donate one new mattress to a homeless shelter or charity for every ten that they sell.

And at the time of writing they have donated over 9,000 mattresses already.

Which I think is pretty fantastic.

They are also committed to planting one tree for every mattress they sell through the Arbor Day Foundation.

And 50% of the steel used to make their pocket springs comes from recycled automobiles.

So you are dealing with a great company here that really do give back to the world around them.

And you also get a free 100-night trial with the Sapira Hybrid.

This is great as it'll give you the perfect length of time to really make sure that it's right for you.

And if you decide that it isn't then they'll collect it for free and give you a full refund.

So you have absolutely nothing to lose by giving one a try.

Overall this mattress will give you a great mix of support and comfort while keeping you cool during the night.

Which isn't bad in my book.

Pros and Cons

  • Hybrid mix of materials gives a great mix of support and comfort.

Rather than developing a range of mattresses they focus on designing and perfecting one that will fit every individual.

To do this they are using the very latest in scientific research and testing to constantly refine and improve their product.

And by selling their mattresses online they are cutting out the need for middlemen and partnerships with large department stores.

Which keeps the costs to you down and makes the Simba a very affordable mattress and great value for the quality you get.

Extensive Testing and Refinement

This mattress is marketed by Simba as the most advanced mattress in the world.

Which is quite a grand claim, but when you see how much testing has gone into the design then you can begin to see why they would say that.

Simba work with the Live To Sleep institute to test and perfect their design.

This has involved profiling more than 10 million people and 180 million body profile data points to create a mattress that will fit every individual.

And this has resulted in a hybrid design that is very unique in a mattress.

As it contains a mixture of conical pocket springs, visco memory foam and latex to provide both comfort and support.

Which is just what you need in a mattress if you suffer from back pain.

Composition

So how is the Simba Hybrid mattress made up?

There are five layers in total which all combine to give you a great night's kip.

The top layer is a sleep surface made from 100% polyester which is designed to allow the air to flow through it.

Which is great as it helps to keep the mattress cooler to sleep on.

However one down side is that it can't be removed and washed, so you'll need to spot clean it instead.

Underneath this is a thin layer of Simbatex latex which provides initial support and comfort.

Then comes the meat in the pudding which is the 2,500 conical pocket springs which adapt to each individual movement and give the mattress it's support.

Underneath this is the layer of visco memory foam that moulds to your body and provides the comfort.

And finally there is a base layer for support with 7 different zones.

Now unlike certain other mattresses in this review this one is 100% synthetic and consists of no natural products.

And while that can pose health and safety questions, this mattress stands up to scrutiny.

It's hypoallergenic, CFC free and complies with UK fire regulations.

So you can still get a clean, safe and hygienic sleep with the Simba Hybrid.

Support

So how effective is the Simba Hybrid mattress for support?

Well it has a medium-firm feel although they don't specify the actual density.

But being medium-firm is great because medium-firm mattresses have been shown to provide the best amount of support for people with back pain (13).

The main crux of the support comes from the 2,500 conical pocket springs which move horizontally and vertically to fit the shape of your body as you move.

These springs are designed to work individually and adjust to your posture as you sleep, keeping you correctly aligned.

So this provides support to fit every individual, although you need to be aware that the maximum weight this mattress is designed to take is 18st so it may not effective for heavier people.

There is also a thin layer of latex above the pocket springs which provides an initial level of support.

And the foam foundation base has 7 different zones all offering varying levels of support.

So from a support point of view this mattress ticks plenty of important boxes.

Comfort

But is it comfortable?

Well the overwhelming response has been that people have found this mattress to give them a great night's sleep.

However you need to be aware that it can feel firm to begin with as your body gets used to sleeping on it.

So if you're wanting a super soft memory foam type mattress then this probably isn't the one for you.

However this mattress provides good comfort levels to those who don't mind a firmer feeling mattress.

The visco memory foam layer moulds to the contours of your body as you sleep.

Which adds comfort by taking the pressure off of your pressure points, especially in your hips and shoulders.

And this will also stop the need for tossing and turning during the night, allowing your body to relax and drift into a deeper and more restorative sleep.

So it can help your body to repair itself as you sleep.

And another thing that makes it comfortable to sleep in is that it's breathable.

The sleep surface is made from polyester and designed so that air and moisture can pass through it rather than getting trapped.

And placing the memory foam layer further down in the mattress means that you are not in direct contact with it.

So you are less exposed to the heat that can emanate from sleeping on memory foam.

Both of which means this mattress will feel cooler and fresher to sleep on than a traditional memory foam mattress.

However you need to be aware that that doesn't mean it never gets hot, just that there is less chance of heat retention with this one.

There is also an initial odour with this mattress which is common with synthetic memory foam, however this should fade within a few days.

Durability

As you'd expect from a mattress that has been so extensively tested this one is robust and built to last.

It's been shown to hold it's shape well after regular use.

And it comes with a 10-year no questions asked guarantee too.

So you are fully protected and can see this as a long-term purchase that will get replaced if anything should go wrong.

Ethics

So now I've told you all about the mattress, I wanted to share a few things that I really like about the company that make it.

Firstly they'll offer you a free 100-night trial.

This is great as it'll give you the perfect length of time to really make sure that it's right for you.

And if you decide that it isn't then they'll collect it for free and give you a full refund.

So you have absolutely nothing to lose.

Plus Simba donate any returned mattresses to local charities rather than reselling them.

How cool is that!

So I'd have no hesitation in recommending the Simba Hybrid mattress to anyone with back pain.

It gives you cutting-edge support and comfort at an affordable price, plus you get to trial it for 3-months.

And if you click and buy through the button below then Simba will also give you £50 off.

Give it a go!

5. The Leesa Mattress

$$

Leesa mattress review

Features

  • 10" thick, medium memory foam mattress.
  • Made with 3 layers of high quality foam.
  • Which? Best Buy rated as a mattress suitable for everyone.
  • CertiPUR-US certified, hypo-allergenic and fire retardant.
  • 100-night free trial.
  • 10-year full replacement warranty.
  • £50, $75 or C$100 off offer by clicking the link here.

Comfort

  • Top layer of cooling Avena foam allows airflow for a cooler sleep.
  • Middle layer of memory foam moulds to your body as you sleep bringing pressure relief.
  • Polyester/lycra cover is soft and comfortable to lay on.

Support

  • Medium feel so may be too soft for people who prefer a firmer mattress.
  • Top layer of Avena foam provides more support than regular memory foam (3.65 lbs density).
  • Bottom layer of core support foam provides solid support and stability.
  • Maximum weight for people using this mattress is set at 300 lbs.

Summary

Similarly to the Simba Hybrid mattress, the Leesa Mattress is also made by one of the new breed of mattress companies that sell their mattresses online rather than in department stores.

So again you are getting good value for your money as they are cutting out the middleman.

However unlike the Simba Hybrid this mattress is made totally from foam.

And consequently it is softer and is probably better for those that need softness and comfort rather than a firmer level of support.

Composition

So how is the Leesa Mattress made up?

There are 3 foam layers in total which all combine to give you cool, contouring pressure relief and core support.

The top layer is 2" thick and made from cooling Avena foam which is designed to allow air to flow through it.

This is great as it helps to keep the mattress cooler to sleep on.

The middle layer provides the comfort and consists of 2" of memory foam that moulds to your body as you sleep.

And finally there is a 6" foam base that provides core support and stability.

This is all encased in Leesa's polyester/lycra blend cover that is soft, comfortable and great to look at.

And a good thing with this mattress is that it is made with CertiPUR-US approved foams.

This means they don't contain dangerous chemicals and have low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions.

So you can be sure of the indoor air quality of your bedroom while using a Leesa.

And being hypoallergenic and fire retardant you can sleep safely and soundly on it too.

Support

I'd have to say that the Leesa mattress scores better for comfort than it does for support.

It has a medium feel to it which is less than the recommended firmness for mattresses for back pain (medium-firm).

So it may feel a bit too soft for people that need a firmer level of support.

However that's not to say it doesn't provide any support for your back.

It comes with a 6" thick core base of support foam that is designed to add strength and stability to the mattress.

And it does a good job of doing just that for most individuals, being designed to provide support for anyone up to 300 lbs.

The top layer of Avena foam also provides an initial level of support that is above that of traditional memory foam.

You'll get enough bounce and spring to allow for freedom of movement without sinking in and getting stuck.

So from a support point of view this mattress still has it's plus points.

However a downside to the Leesa mattress is that the support at the side of the mattress is quite poor.

This can make it feel like you are falling out if you venture right the way over to the edge as you sleep.

So something to consider if you regularly find yourself in this position during the night.

Comfort

Now we come to the big plus point of the Leesa mattress. It's really comfortable.

Even Michael Phelps thinks so!

And the main source of this comfort comes from the 2" middle layer of memory foam.

This is designed to mould to your body as you sleep and give the impression that you are sleeping on a cloud.

Sounds pretty good right?

This floating feeling provides relief on your pressure points as you sleep and allows your body to fully relax and restore itself.

It'll also stop you from tossing and turning all night which will allow you to get into a deeper and more restorative sleep.

And another thing that makes it comfortable to sleep in is that the 3 layers fo foam are designed to be breathable.

The top layer of Avena foam allows constant airflow to pass through it so there's less chance of heat getting trapped.

Plus the mattress is encased in a polyester/lycra blend cover that is not only soft and comfortable to lie down on, it's breathable and cooling too.

Both of which means this mattress will feel cooler and fresher to sleep on than a traditional memory foam mattress.

However as with all memory foam this mattress can still get hot.

So if you think this may pose a problem for you then you may need to consider a latex mattress instead.

Also there will be an initial odour with this mattress (as with all memory foam) that may annoy some, but this should fade within a few days.

However all things considered this mattress should give you a very comfortable night's sleep.

Durability

The Leesa mattress is made of high quality foam that is designed to be solid and long-lasting.

And it comes with a 10-year full replacement warranty too.

So you are fully protected and can see this as a long-term purchase that will get replaced if anything should go wrong.

Ethics

Leesa run a one-in-ten program which I think is absolutely fantastic (you can find out more about it in the video above).

For every ten mattresses they sell they will donate one to a local homeless shelter or charity.

So by buying through them you are doing your own little bit to make the world a better place.

And like Simba they'll also offer you a free 100-night trial.

So you can really make sure that a Leesa mattress is right for you before committing yourself.

And if you decide that it isn't then they'll collect it for free and give you a full refund.

You have absolutely nothing to lose.

So I'd have no hesitation in recommending the Leesa mattress to anyone with back pain who is looking for a softer more comfortable mattress.

It has been awarded a Which? Best Buy rating with them saying that it was one of the best mattresses they'd tested in recent years.

Heady praise indeed!

And if you click and buy through the button below then Leesa will give you money off your purchase (£50 in the UK, $75 in the US, $100 in Canada).

So if you want a comfortable nights sleep make sure you consider a Leesa mattress.

Pros and Cons

  • A very comfortable mattress to sleep on.
  • 3 layers of foam provide a mix of comfort and support.
  • Made with CeriPUR-US approved foam.
  • Hypo-allergenic and fire safe.
  • 100-day free trial and 10-year guarantee.
  • Delivered to your door and great value.
  • Which? Best Buy rated.
  • Made by an ethical and forward thinking company.
  • May be too soft for those who prefer a firmer more supportive mattress.
  • Can get hot at times.
  • Not the best for support at the edges.
  • Polyester/lycra cover can't be removed for cleaning (needs to be spot cleaned).

6. Amerisleep Revere Mattress

$$$

Amerisleep Revere Review

Features

  • 12" thick, medium-firm memory foam mattress.
  • Made with 2 different layers of high quality foam with an open cell structure.
  • Comes with a Celiant cover that dissipates body heat.
  • Eco-friendly and safe (foam made from plant-based materails rather than petroleum).
  • 100-night free trial.
  • 20-year guarantee.
  • $50 off offer by clicking the link here.

Comfort

  • Firmer feel than most memory foam mattresses so may not suit someone who prefers a softer one.
  • Foam made with an open cell structure that makes it cool and breathable.
  • Celiant cover turns body heat into pain relieving infra-red light.

Support

  • Recovers shape faster than traditional memory foam, providing more support.
  • Top 3" layer of Bio-Pur foam is dense and has some push back support.
  • Bottom 9" layer of Bio-Core foam provides solid support and stability.

Summary

The Amerisleep Revere mattress is an medium-firm, eco-friendly memory foam mattress that provides a good level of support along with a cooling sleeping experience.

And it is slightly firmer to sleep on than you might expect from a memory foam mattress.

This is because the combination of foam used here is denser, more reactive and naturally made than most other memory foam mattresses on the market.

Eco-friendly

Amerisleep prides itself on being an eco-friendly mattress company, both in how the mattresses are made and how they are delivered.

And both the Bio-Pur and Bio-Core memory foam used in this mattress are made from plant-based materials rather than petroleum.

This means the mattress won't give off harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the bedroom, so you can be assured of indoor air quality.

Amerisleep also meet the Clean Air Acts standards by following a zero emissions manufacturing process, meaning no air pollution is created when they are making their foams.

And when it's ready the mattress is compressed and delivered to your door in an eco-friendly box.

And if you decide to return it they will collect it and either give it to charity or recycle it.

So if you want to trade with a green thinking company you could do far worse than Amerisleep.

Composition

So how is the Amerisleep Revere mattress made up?

There are 2 foam layers that form the bulk of it along with a cover designed to keep it cool and performing well.

The top layer is 3" thick and made from Bio-Pur foam which is designed to be 5 times more breathable than traditional memory foam.

This is great as it helps to keep the mattress cooler to sleep on.

The bottom layer of Bio-Core foam is 9" thick and provides a support layer that adds stability and prevents the mattress from sagging.

And this is all covered in a Celliant cover that is made with thermoreactive yarn designed to turn body heat into infra-red light.

Sounds pretty high-tech right!

Support

The Amerisleep revere scores highly for support compared to other memory foam mattresses.

It has a medium-firm feel to it which is great as this has been shown to be the desired firmness for people with back pain (13).

And the main source of this support comes from the 9" Bio-Core support base which has an ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) rating of 40.

This is a higher rating than most medium-firm mattresses have and means the foam won't sag underneath you.

Instead it'll push back and support you rather than allowing you to sink too far into it.

And the top layer of Bio-Pur foam also provides an initial level of support that is above that of traditional memory foam.

This layer has an ILD rating of 10 and recovers it's shape faster than traditional memory foam, bouncing back in an average of just 4 seconds.

And this bounce makes the bed easier to move around in and more supportive.

So from a support point of view this one is a good choice for a memory foam mattress.

Comfort

Now as this mattress has a firmer feel than other memory foam mattresses it may not feel as comfortable to some people.

But if you don't mind a slightly firmer feel then this is still a really comfortable mattress.

The Bio-Pur top layer of foam is great for providing pressure relief as it moulds to the contours of your body.

This brings relief for your pressure points as you sleep and allows your body to fully relax and restore itself.

It'll also stop you from tossing and turning all night which will allow you to get into a deeper and more restorative sleep.

But what really makes this one so comfortable is the fact that it's so breathable.

A big problem with memory foam mattresses is that they can trap heat and get uncomfortably hot during the night.

However the open cell technology and natural products used in the creation of the foam means that air and moisture will pass through it rather than get trapped.

In fact the Bio-Pur top layer of foam is 5 times more breathable than regular memory foam.

So it will feel much cooler to sleep on.

The thin Celliant cover is also breathable and cooling.

And it will also improve this mattresses comfort performance in other ways too.

It does this as it is made with an advanced fabric consisting of 13 thermoreactive minerals that help to turn your body heat into infra-red light.

And this has been clinically proven to improve your circulation and increase your blood flow and oxygen levels, which will both help to bring you relief from pain.

Pretty cool I think (if you'll pardon the pun!).

Durability

The high quality construction and natural properties of the foam used in the Amerisleep mattress make it very solid and long-lasting.

The 9" Bio-Core base is designed with such a high ILD rating that it won't sag even after many years of use.

And you are covered with a long warranty too.

This runs for 20-years but you need to be aware that you are only fully protected for the first 10 years.

After that you will have to pay a percentage of the replacement costs pro-rata depending on how many years into the warranty you are.

Free Trial and Money Off

As with many of the other mattresses in this review you get a free 100-day trial to make sure that the mattress is right for you.

And if you decide to return it within the trial period they will collect it from you free of charge and give you a full refund.

So you'll have plenty of time to make your mind up without any obligation to keep it.

Amerisleep are also offering you $50 off the Revere mattress if you buy through the link in the button below.

Also they always seem to be running additional money off promotions on their website (at the time of writing there is a $200 off bonus).

So keep your eyes peeled and you might be able to pick up a bargain.

And if you want a memory foam mattress that can offer you more support then don't hesitate to try the Amerisleep Revere.

Pros and Cons

  • Provides a greater level of support than most memory foam mattresses.
  • Bio-Pur foam 5 times more breathable than traditional memory foam.
  • Foam recovers shape quickly giving better support and freer movement.
  • Celliant cover turns body heat into infra-red light which helps you gain pain relief.
  • Foam is made from natural products and manufactured in an eco-friendly way.
  • Durable and long-lasting.
  • 100-day free trial and 20-year warranty.
  • May be too firm for those who prefer a softer memory foam mattress.
  • Provides good support but not as much as a latex mattress can.
  • Can give off an odour initially, although this should fade within a week.

Overall Back On Site rating: 4.3 out of 5 stars
