Which Is The Best Mattress Topper For Your Back Pain?

best mattress topper

Yes I agree, she is the best thing I can think of to put on top of my mattress too!

Unfortunately she's probably not going to work wonders for your back pain.

But if you wake up with aches and pains in the morning.

Or if you struggle to sleep properly because of aches and pains during the night.

Then you do have options open to you that can change that.

Which is great as I bet you're nodding your head to at least one of these.

Because both can be a big problem for people with chronic lower back pain.

And this is why making sure we are sleeping on the right mattress is a vital part of any pain management strategy.

Now I'm sure you've all had experience of sleeping on a dodgy mattress before.

Whether it was one that was so hard that you woke up feeling like you'd been hit by a truck.

Or one that was so soft you had nightmares that you were sinking into quicksand all night.

There's no denying that the wrong type of mattress can have a big impact your sleep quality and back pain.

So if your mattress falls into one of those categories the answer is simple right?

Just buy a new mattress already!

However it's not that easy.

Because replacing your mattress is so bloody expensive.

So what can you do if you can't afford to replace your faltering old friend right now?

Just suffer in silence?

Never!

You have a more affordable option that can breathe new life into your old mattress.

And that is to buy a mattress topper.

In this article I review and recommend the following mattress toppers for you that are great for your back pain.

And you can jump straight to the detailed review of a particular one by clicking on the links below.

But if you want to find out more about mattress toppers first then read on and I'll explain what benefits they can bring to your quality of sleep and your back pain.

Why Do I Need A Mattress Topper?

Why do i need a mattress topper

Mattress toppers can be so effective yet they are also so easy to use.

They simply lay on top of your mattress and add an extra layer of comfort or support, depending on what you need.

So if your existing mattress is lacking either of these qualities you can find a topper that can fix it.

Great news right?

But before you start thinking you'll never need to replace your mattress ever again let me just say this:

A mattress topper is not a magic wand!

While they are a massive help, some mattresses are just too far gone to be able to salvage.

So if your mattress would look more at home on a skip than in a bedroom.

Or if you haven't bought a new mattress since the days Mike Tyson was knocking people out within 2 rounds.

Then a mattress topper might not do any good.

But if your mattress is just a bit too firm or soft for you.

Or is getting a bit jaded and lacking support or comfort.

Then a good quality topper can transform it.

And this can help you to relax, sleep more deeply, maintain a good spinal alignment, and reduce any back, neck or shoulder pain.

What Type of Mattress Toppers Are Best for Back Pain?

Mattress for back pain

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to mattress toppers.

You can find ones made of wool, gel, feather, and fiber among others and each have a different feel and carry different benefits.

However people with back pain need to focus on mattress toppers made from either latex or memory foam.

Why just these two I hear you ask?

Because both of these have been shown to be the best for reducing back pain.

But which one should you go for?

Well that depends on whether you need more comfort or more support.

Check out the video below for a quick demonstration of the differences between the two:

Memory Foam Toppers

Memory foam toppers are a great option if you want to add more comfort to a firm and unforgiving mattress.

So what makes them good for back pain?

Well making your bed more comfortable will help you to get a better quality of sleep.

And sleeping on memory foam can feel like you are floating on a cloud.

You sink into it and it moulds to the contours of your body throughout the night.

So unlike sleeping on a firm mattress which can be brutal for putting pressure on your spine and pressure points.

Sleeping on memory foam will relieve this pressure and allow your body to relax and replenish properly during sleep.

So it won't leave you waking up stiff as a board!

Secondly, this additional comfort will reduce the need to toss and turn throughout the night.

So you can get into and maintain a deeper sleep.

And that will help you to wake up feeling refreshed rather than frazzled.

Sounds good right?

However while many people with back pain swear by memory foam mattresses and toppers, they are not for everyone.

While they are really comfortable, they don't generally tend to provide a great amount of support for your back.

So they may be too soft for some people.

This is the case for me personally.

Even 5 minutes laying down on memory foam causes my pain to ramp up.

However everyone's pain is different, so you need to work out whether this extra comfort and softness would benefit you.

And if you decide you need somethiong firmer and more supportive, then latex toppers are the way to go.

Latex Toppers

Latex toppers are the best choice if you want to add support to a mattress that is too soft.

Medium-firm mattresses have been shown in scientific studies to be the best option for people with back pain (13).

So a latex topper can be just the tonic for firming up your soft mattress and providing better support for your back.

Now latex toppers also mould to the shape of your body as you sleep.

But unlike memory foam they push back against your body and react to each movement during the night.

This means that you don't sink in to them as much and this brings a few advantages.

Firstly they are easier to sit up, move around in, and get out of than a memory foam topper or mattress which can feel like you need a six pack to be able to get out of sometimes!

Secondly this support helps you to maintain a natural alignment of the spine.

Plus it's easier to get jiggy on latex (anyone that has tried sex on memory foam must agree with this!).

They also don't trap heat as much as memory foam and have less of an inital odour.

So case closed right?

Why bother with memory foam when latex has all these extra benefits?

Well it's not that easy unfortunately.

Firstly latex toppers are more expensive than memory foam ones.

So you need to make sure that the benefits you gain are worth the extra costs.

Secondly certain people have an allergy to latex, so you need to be careful if you are prone to allergies.

And finally some people will just prefer the extra comfort provided by the memory foam over the firmer support of a latex topper.

So it's all about personal preference really and knowing what your body needs.

And for this reason I have selected what I think are the best choices in both categories for you to take a look at.

The Best Memory Foam Mattress Toppers

Are you ready to get more comfortable in the bedroom?

If so try out one of the following memory foam toppers and get ready for a heavenly night's sleep.

For People In The US & Canada

Lucid 3" Ventilated Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Lucid 3" Ventilated Memory Foam Mattress Topper review
ireliev TENS and EMS

Features

  • 3" thick.
  • 3 lbs density.
  • Made from high quality open cell memory foam.
  • CertiPUR-US certified for content, performance and environmental friendliness.
  • Comes with a 3-year warranty.

Comfort

  • Moulds to the contours of the body taking pressure of your pressure points.
  • Ventilated design makes it cooler to sleep on than other memory foam toppers.
  • Good for softening a mattress that is too firm.

Support

  • Soft to lay on so built more for comfort than for support.
  • However memory foam cradles your body, and helps to ease back, neck and shoulder pain.

Summary

The Lucid 3" Ventilated Memory Foam Mattress Topper is a great choice for making your firm mattress more comfortable.

And this can help reduce your back, neck and shoulder pain as sleeping on a mattress that is too firm can be a killer for your body.

It places constant pressure on your various pressure points which makes it impossible for your body to relax during the night.

So it's no wonder we wake up with aches and pains sometimes right?

But the high quality memory foam of this topper cradles your body rather than putting pressure on it.

It moulds to your contours allowing your body to relax completely.

And this pressure relief also means you are less likely to suffer from tossing and turning during the night, allowing you to get into a deeper sleep which is more restorative.

However what makes this memory foam topper so comfortable means that it won't provide as much support as a latex topper.

Now medium-firm mattresses have been shown to provide the best amount of support for people with back pain (13).

So the softness of this topper (coming with a 3 lbs density) may not suit everyone with back pain.

However the open cell technology of the Lucid memory foam compresses evenly, meaning you won't sink in as much as you can with other memory foam toppers.

This will help to keep your spine aligned as you sleep, so it's not a total write off from a support point of view.

This open cell technology also makes the topper more durable.

It prevents your body making lasting indentations on the memory foam, so it won't sag over time.

And another good feature of this particular topper is the ventilated design.

This makes it cooler to sleep on than other memory foam toppers, although it will be hotter than sleeping on a latex topper.

And while a strong odour can be a problem initially with memory foam, this isn't as much of a problem with this topper.

So all pretty good news.

It's also CertiPUR-US certified which means it has been tested and passed for materials used, environmental friendliness, and quality of performance.

This makes it a safe topper to use.

And it's also been classed as having low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions, which is good for the indoor air quality of your bedroom.

So all in all this memory foam mattress topper from Lucid is my top choice if you need a softer and more comfortable mattress to sleep on.

Just be aware that if you require more support then a latex mattress topper will be a better choice for you.

Pros and Cons

  • Adds a layer of comfort to your firm mattress.
  • Takes the pressure off your pressure points, relieving back, neck and shoulder pain.
  • Moulds to your body but still keeps your spine aligned.
  • Open cell technology prevents leaving body indentations over time making it very durable and long-lasting.
  • Ventilated design makes it more breathable than other memory foam toppers.
  • CertiPUR-US certified and low VOC emissions.
  • Softness of this topper means it doesn't provide the support of a latex topper.
  • Doesn't come with a cover.

Memory Foam Warehouse coolmax 75cm memory foam mattress topper review
ireliev TENS and EMS

Features

  • 3" thick.
  • 4.7 lbs density.
  • Made from high quality memory foam.
  • Comes with temperature sensitive Coolmax cover.
  • Comes with a 12-month guarantee.

Comfort

  • Moulds to the contours of the body taking pressure of your pressure points.
  • Good for softening a mattress that is too firm.
  • Breathable - Coolmax cover allows air and moisture to ass through.

Support

  • Made with highest density memory foam, so provides more support than most.
  • Cradles your body, and helps to ease back, neck and shoulder pain.

Summary

The Memory Foam Warehouse Coolmax 7.5cm Memory Foam Mattress Topper is a great choice for UK-based people looking to make their firm mattress softer and more comfortable.

And this can help reduce your back, neck and shoulder pain as sleeping on a mattress that is too firm can be a killer for your body.

It places constant pressure on your various pressure points which makes it impossible for your body to relax during the night.

And this can lead to a morning full of aches and pains.

But the high quality memory foam of this topper moulds to the contours of your body as you lie on it.

So rather than putting pressure on you, it will feel like you are floating on a cloud.

And this allows your body to relax completely.

Also this pressure relief means you are less likely to suffer from tossing and turning during the night, allowing you to get into a deeper sleep which is more restorative.

However while this topper is comfortable, it's also surprisingly supportive.

This is because it is made of the highest density memory foam (4.7 lbs) which gives it a firmer feel than the average memory foam topper.

Now this is great for your back as it will provide support that is close to a medium-firm mattress.

And medium-firm mattresses have been shown to provide the best amount of support for people with back pain (13).

However as it is firmer than usual memory foam it may not suit you if you are looking for a softer feel.

But personally I think the unique mix between support and comfort that this topper provides makes it a great choice for people with back pain.

Also this highly dense memory foam also makes the topper more durable, so it shouldn't sag or leave indents over time.

And a great feature of this particular topper is that it comes with a temperature sensitive Coolmax cover.

The Coolmax fabric of the cover allows air and moisture to flow through it.

Which makes it cooler to sleep on than other memory foam toppers, although not as cool as the ventilated Lucid topper.

And while a strong odour can be a problem initially with memory foam (especially in cheap toppers) this isn't as much of a problem with this topper.

Although it will have an initial odour this should fade pretty quickly as long as you follow the instructions to allow it to air for a few hours before use.

It's also meets UK fire regulations so you can be assured of safety.

So all in all this memory foam topper from Memory Foam Warehouse is my top choice for the UK.

Not only will it make your firm mattress softer and more comfortable, it will give you a decent level of support too.

And this is great news for your back as well as your quality of sleep in general.

Pros and Cons

  • Makes your firm mattress softer and more comfortable.
  • Takes the pressure off your pressure points, relieving back, neck and shoulder pain.
  • Moulds to your body but still keeps your spine aligned.
  • High density memory foam provides medium level support for your back.
  • Coolmax cover makes it more breathable than other memory foam toppers.
  • Meets UK fire regulations.
  • Extra support provided by this topper means it's not as soft as other memory foam toppers.
  • Like most memory foam products it comes with a slight odour that fades if you follow instructions.

The Best Latex Mattress Toppers

If you're looking for more support from your existing mattress then you won't go wrong with either of the following latex toppers.

I've reviewed my top choice for both the United States and the United Kingdom here.

For People In The US

Sleep On Latex - Pure Green 100% Natural Mattress Topper

$$$

Sleep on latex - Pure Green 100% Natural Latex Mattress Topper
ireliev TENS and EMS

Features

  • 3" thick (other sizes available).
  • 5 lbs density.
  • All natural - made from 100% natural latex.
  • EcoInstitut, Okeo-tex and Greenguard certified so quality and safety assured.
  • Very durable.

Comfort

  • Moulds to the body but you don't sink in as much as with memory foam.
  • Breathable so doesn't trap heat.
  • Medium firmness of the topper means it is more supportive and not as soft as other toppers.

Support

  • Medium firm (30 ILD) which has been shown to be best for people with back pain.
  • Good support as latex made from the Dunlop process, making it springy and reactive to movement.

Summary

The Sleep on Latex Pure Green 100% Natural Mattress Topper is the worlds best selling latex mattress topper.

And for good reason.

As it provides excellent support to mattresses that are either too firm or too soft.

You have the choice of soft, medium-firm or firm versions when buying this topper, although for this review I have selected the medium-firm version.

This is because medium-firm mattresses have been shown to provide the best amount of support for people with back pain (13).

And as this version of the topper comes with a 5 lbs density and a 30 ILD (indentation load deflection) you'll have the same kind of support as you would on a medium-firm mattress.

This is because the latex is processed using the Dunlop method, which makes it springy and reactive.

And that is great from a support point of view.

As rather than allowing your body to just sink in like memory foam does, the latex will push back and help to keep your spine correctly aligned as you sleep.

Which is all great news for your back.

But do be aware that this will mean it won't be as soft and comfortable as a memory foam topper (although you can select the soft version if that suits you better).

However that is not to stay this topper is uncomfortable.

Far from it.

The latex moulds to your body and adjusts to every movement as you sleep.

So you'll get a great sleep on this as well as getting plenty of support.

It's also breathable too as it is designed so air travels through the foam, which makes it cooler to sleep on than many other toppers.

However you need to be aware that that doesn't mean it never gets hot, just that there is less chance of heat retention with this one.

But what I really like about this topper and what makes it unique is that it is 100% natural.

In fact I'd say it's the most natural mattress topper you can buy.

And this is important because it ensures it's a high quality topper and makes it safe and healthy to use too.

This is because the latex is made solely from Sri Lankan rubber trees and doesn't contain any synthetic latex, fillers or fire retardant chemicals.

And it has passed extensive tests from regulating bodies such as ecoInstitut, Okeo-tex and Greenguard to show that it doesn't have any emissions of potentially harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

So this topper is a safe and healthy addition to any bedroom.

And finally it's very durable too.

Pure Green latex scored 99/100 on the LGA physical properties quality test, marking it down as extremely durable and with a high quality of performance.

So this will last you a long time and won't lose it's thickness and firmness over time.

All in all this latex mattress topper from Sleep on Latex is a top choice that will provide you with great support as well as being safe, healthy, comfortable and durable to boot.

And I'd have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone who wants to try a latex topper.

Pros and Cons

  • Provides a medium-firmness that is perfect for people with back pain.
  • 100% natural latex which is great for safety, quality and health.
  • Dunlop processed latex makes the topper springy and reactive to movement.
  • Moulds to your body but pushes back rather than letting you sink in.
  • Very durable and long-lasting.
  • More breathable than other toppers.
  • Medium firm support means it's not as soft and comfortable as memory foam.
  • May have an initial odour, although not as strong as memory foam.
  • Doesn't come with a cover.

Yanis Essential 80 Latex Topper

$$$

Yanis Essential 80 Latex Topper
ireliev TENS and EMS

Features

  • 3" thick (other sizes available).
  • 4.8 lbs density.
  • Made with blended latex - 20% natural, 80% synthetic.
  • Comes with a zip off Tencel Purotex cover.
  • 10-year warranty.

Comfort

  • Latex responds to body movements, taking pressure off pressure points.
  • Breathable so doesn't trap heat.
  • Medium firmness of the topper means it is more supportive and not as soft as other toppers.

Support

  • Medium firm (28 ILD) which has been shown to be best for people with back pain.
  • Good support as latex made from the Dunlop process, making it springy and reactive to movement.

Summary

The Yanis Essential 80 Latex Topper is my top choice for people in the UK.

Like the Pure Green topper it provides excellent support to mattresses that are either too firm or too soft.

By placing this topper onto your existing mattress you will get a medium firmness which is great for your back.

Because medium-firm mattresses have been shown to provide the best amount of support for people with back pain (13).

And as this topper comes with a 4.8 lbs density and a 28 ILD (indentation load deflection) you'll have the same kind of support as you would on a medium-firm mattress.

This support comes because the Dunlop-processed latex is springy and reacts to your every movement during the night.

And that is great news from a support point of view.

As rather than allowing your body to just sink in like memory foam does, the latex will push back and help to keep your spine in a natural position as you sleep.

This of course means it may not be as soft and comfortable as a memory foam topper, although the comfort rating is set at medium so it's still pretty good.

And this topper is great for reducing your aches and pains as you sleep.

As the latex responds instantly to every movement, which works to take the pressure off your pressure points during the night.

And this will allow your muscles to relax and make waking up with aches and pains a thing of the past.

It's breathable too as latex which makes it cooler to sleep on than memory foam toppers.

However that doesn't mean it will never get hot, just that there is less chance of heat retention with a latex topper.

Where this topper falls down in comparison with the Pure Green one is that it is made with blended latex tather than being 100% natural.

In fact it is only 20% natural, with the other 80% being made up of synthetic latex.

But while this isn't ideal, it is halogen, metal, fire-retardant and chemical free.

So it's still a safe topper to use.

In fact it's been classified as anti bacterial and hypo-allergenic.

And an advantage over the Pure Green topper is that it comes with a Tencel Purotex cover.

This is great as it not only protects the topper, it also protects the user from dust mites and odours.

The cover is comfortable, easy to remove by simply undoing the zip, and is washable too.

So a great added bonus!

And as with most latex toppers this one is very durable.

In fact you'll get a 10-year warranty with it, so you can see how confident they are that it's built to last!

All in all this latex mattress topper from Yanis is a top choice for UK-based consumers that provides great support, durability, and a cover that can help to maintain it and prevent allergies.

Don't hesitate to give it a try if your back is cursing at your old mattress.

Pros and Cons

  • Medium-firm support that is great for people with back pain.
  • Dunlop processed latex makes the topper springy and reactive to every movement.
  • Takes the pressure off your pressure points as you sleep.
  • Comes with a washable Tencel Purotex cover.
  • Hypo-allergenic and anti bacterial.
  • Very durable with a 10-year warranty.
  • Cooler than memory foam toppers.
  • Medium firm support means it's not as soft and comfortable as memory foam.
  • Not 100% natural like the Pure Green topper.

Overall Back On Site rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Rounding Up

I hope that the reviews here have helped you to see how a high quality mattress topper can help you get a better night's sleep as well as reduce your back pain in bed.

And they are a great option for those of us that don't want to go to the expense and hassle of replacing our existing mattresses right away.

The two types of toppers you need to consider are memory foam and latex.

If you need your mattress to be firmer and more supportive then a latex topper is the one for you.

However if you need to soften up a mattress that is too firm and are more interested in comfort rather than support then go for a memory foam topper instead.

Just bear in mind that everyone's back pain is different.

So there is no definitive answer on which type of topper is best for you, you just need to make a judgement call on what you think will help you the most.

But do try one of these toppers if sleep is a problem for you.

Because getting a good night's sleep is vital for being able to reduce, manage and live with chronic lower back pain.
